SCHERERVILLE
Town considers joining anti-railway sale group
Schererville officials are considering whether to join a group opposed to Canadian National Railway's proposed purchase of the EJ&E Railway.
If the purchase goes through, train traffic through Schererville would more than triple. Schererville representatives have been attending meetings with a group called The Regional Answer to Canadian National, or TRAC. The group mainly is composed of Illinois communities, although a handful of Indiana communities participate.
The group is asking for a minimum of $10,000 from each community to cover legal fees and marketing costs, Schererville Councilman Tom Schmitt said.
It is unclear whether the $10,000 is the only financial contribution the group wants.
