VALPARAISO | Pleas of not guilty were entered Monday on behalf of a 20-year-old LaPorte woman charged with causing a fatal crash on U.S. 6 and County Road 350 East more than a year ago.
Amanda Buchta appeared in court alone, but told Porter Superior Judge Bill Alexa she planned to hire an attorney.
Prosecutors read through all 13 charges facing the young woman, including counts referring to a drunken driving conviction she received just months before the fatal crash.
A trial was scheduled for May 11, with preliminary hearings Feb. 6, March 6 and April 3.
Police say Buchta consumed beer before the crash and tested positive for both alcohol and marijuana.
Witnesses said Buchta was westbound on U.S. 6 at about 12:15 a.m. Sept. 26, 2007, when her Pontiac Grand Prix went off the road to the north, then swerved back onto the roadway, crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound semi driven by Ohio resident James Stetter, who was not injured.
The crash killed Buchta's front seat passenger Adam Candler, 19, of Kingsbury, and injured Buchta and her back seat passenger, Sierra Marquardt, who was 18 years old and living in LaPorte when the crash occurred.
Marquardt told police Buchta was driving fast, and police said the speedometer on Buchta's car was stuck at 77 mph after the crash. Buchta and her passengers were en route to a friend's home in Portage when the crash occurred.
Eleven of the charges against her are drunken driving charges and the other charges are reckless homicide and criminal recklessness.
