CROWN POINT | Russell White admitted Friday to slamming his Chevrolet Blazer into a woman's Jeep Cherokee and severely injuring her in a 2007 accident in Griffith.
The 30-year-old Griffith man pleaded guilty to felony causing serious bodily injury when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated under an agreement with Lake County prosecutors.
White admitted in Lake Criminal Court to having a .29 blood alcohol content at the time of the crash.
In exchange for his guilty plea to the original charge, prosecutors agreed to a two-year suspended sentence to be served on probation. If White successfully completes probation, Judge Salvador Vasquez could consider dropping the felony charge to a misdemeanor.
White was driving 19 to 25 mph over the speed limit when he careened into the victim's vehicle July 29, 2007, court records state. The impact knocked the woman's Cherokee on its side at the intersection of 45th Avenue and LaFayette Street in Griffith.
The woman suffered two broken ribs, a collapsed lung and injuries to her right knee, ankle and shoulder, court records show.
Vasquez will consider acceptance of the plea agreement in an October sentencing hearing, Lake Criminal Court records show.
