En route to AA meeting, man, woman stop at bar

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A man and a woman en route to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting decided to stop at a bar, Porter County police said.

That decision resulted in them crashing their vehicle into a ditch about 2:30 a.m. Friday at Ind. 130 and County Road 600 North.

The woman, Michelle Maynard, 26, of Valparaiso, was arrested on public intoxication and resisting charges. The man, a 40-year-old Valparaiso resident, was taken to Porter Portage Hospital Campus for treatment of a back injury, but police are seeking a warrant to arrest him on a public intoxication charge.

Each person accused the other of driving.

Police arrest M.C. man on intoxication charge

CHESTERTON | Chesterton police responded to Chesterton High School after a school official reported a disorderly man was yelling obscenities at the football game even though several young children were near the man.

The man, Joseph Woodard, 47, of Michigan City, was arrested Thursday evening on a public intoxication charge.

Man faces battery and confinement charges

UNION TOWNSHIP | A Union Township man was arrested on charges of battery, intimidation and criminal confinement after he was accused of hitting a woman, threatening to kill her and preventing her from leaving his home.

Ryan Hybert, 24, of 377 Sassafras Drive, was arrested about 12:15 a.m. Friday.

The woman told police she, Hybert and a few friends went out to eat. After dinner, she and Hybert went to his house. She told police an argument occurred. She said she tried to leave but was hit, threatened and blocked from leaving.

Chesterton man says teenager punched him

JACKSON TOWNSHIP | A 50-year-old Chesterton man told police he was battered by a teenage boy on a moped about 4 p.m. Thursday on Mander Road.

The man told police he was following a moped with a male driving and a female riding on it. He told police the moped was sputtering and the male was blocking the road, not letting vehicles pass. The man told police he finally passed and told the male to move over and allow vehicles to pass.

After passing, the man saw the moped crash end over end. The man stopped, at which time the male ran up to him and punched him in the face. Police were unable to locate the suspect or his passenger.

CHESTERTON

THURSDAY

Fraud. Chesterton resident Paul Brickner reported he purchased a Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit game bundle for $407 on eBay and never received it. The suspect lives in East Lansing, Mich.

Theft. Wanatah resident Melanie Eng reported a $100 safe, a $200 GPS unit and a $150 cellular phone stolen from her car during a football game at Chesterton High School.

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP

FRIDAY

Arrest. Police investigated a loud music complaint at 3 a.m. at the mobile home park at 76 E. U.S. 6 and determined the music was coming from a stolen car occupied by a sleeping man. The man, Michael M. Kinsey, 20, of Gary, was arrested on a possession of stolen property charge. Police said he knows a woman in the park, but fell asleep listening to music. Kinsey said a friend let him borrow the car, which was stolen in Gary.

THURSDAY

Theft. Edward Grott, of the 800 block of north County Road 625 East, reported the theft of several pieces of farm equipment and a pile of scrap iron from his property.

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP

THURSDAY

Vandalism. Valley Drive resident Denise Gasaway reported $300 damage to two truck tires.

Theft. A mobile home park official reported $30 worth of aluminum siding stolen from a mobile home on Harmony Terrace and the copper wire from several utility boxes. The boxes will cost $200 to fix.

FRIDAY

Theft. Drena's Bar and Grill, 636 N. County Road 700 West, reported a $900 decorative table stolen from inside the front doors at the bar. Two men and a woman in a new silver compact car were seen taking it. The bar has surveillance video.

UNION TOWNSHIP

THURSDAY

Theft. Speedway, 473 W. U.S. 30, reported that a person covered up his license plate and stole $76.44 worth of fuel. A witness followed the thief and got his license plate number when he drove to a nearby school and uncovered his In God We Trust license plate. The suspect, a 49-year-old Valparaiso man, faces a theft charge.

Theft. McDonald's, 2002 Calumet Ave., reported $196.54 stolen from a drawer.

Vandalism. Worthington Drive resident Brian Whitt reported $20 damage to a truck tire.
