Movie under stars | Calumet City

Join the Calumet Memorial Park District for Cinema Under the Stars at 8:15 tonight at Veterans Park, 165th Street and Burnham Avenue. See an animated Disney/Pixar film about a rat who finds his dream job in Paris. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for this free showing.

Preschool open house | Lansing

All God's Children preschool will have open houses from 1 to 3 p.m. July 20, Aug. 3 and Aug. 24. Ages 3 to 5 can attend the preschool, which runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children can attend two, three or five days a week at First United Methodist Church, 18420 Burnham Ave.

Farmers' market | Thornton

A farmers market and arts and crafts fair is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Wednesday through Oct. 15 at Hubbard Park, Hubbard and Margaret streets. There will be fresh fruits and vegetables, hand-crafted breads, pork chop sandwiches, vendors for products such as Avon, Tastefully Simple and Watkins. Vendors are welcome to register throughout the season.

Dog walk | Calumet City

Neighborhoods Inc. will have a dog walk at 9 a.m. July 19 at Memorial Park on Wentworth Avenue. In past years, the event has included an acrobatic show, contests for things such as best trick and best dressed dog and animal related nonprofit groups raising awareness of their groups.

Polka picnic | Glenwood

A polka picnic begins at noon July 27 at PACF Farm and Grove, 18600 Glenwood-Thornton Road. Music will be from 2 to 6 p.m. and other activities include free paddle boat rides, bingo, a fishing derby and door prizes. Bring your own lawn chair. Food and beverages will be available and no coolers or BYOB are allowed. Tickets will cost $10 at the gate or $7 in advance. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.

Book fair | Lansing

Scholastic Book Fair is July 21 through Aug. 2 at Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave. It will be open during regular library hours. All items are half price. Hardcovers, paperbacks, picture books and teen books will all be available.

Information session | University Park

Governors State University's College of Health and Human Services will hold a Master of Occupational Therapy degree program information session July 24 on the university's main campus, 1 University Parkway. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the formal program is from 9:30 a.m. to noon in room G-137. Prospective students will learn about the degree program and have an opportunity to meet with current students, faculty and advisers. RSVP.

Battle of the Books! is from 6 to 8 p.m. July 28 at Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Ave. It's for children in sixth through eighth grades who signed up for the battle in June.

Bus tour | Lansing, Chicago

The Lansing Historical Society is sponsoring a bus tour to the historic Pullman district in Chicago. It's from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 20. It costs $75 per person for the visit to America's first planned industrial community, listed as a National Historic District. The well preserved area was built in 1880 by George M. Pullman for the production of his famous sleeper rail car. The tour includes a visit to the Pullman Visitors Center, Greenstone Church, Hotel Florence, Factory Building and a tour of a Pullman home. A gourmet box lunch is served in the hotel. The day includes a historical tour of town and surrounding area. Deadline for reservations is Sept. 6.

FIREFIGHTERS DANCE | Griffith

The Griffith Fire Department hosts a firefighters dance and raffle from 6 p.m. to midnight July 26 at the Griffith Central Fire Station, 130 N. Lafayette St. Lots of door prizes have been donated by area businesses to be raffled as well as a $1,000 grand prize. Firefighters will serve up food and drink, with musical guest Nick Danger will play favorite songs. Tickets can be bought in advance or at the door and cost $2.50, which includes admission to the dance and entry in the cash raffle. All proceeds will go directly to the all-volunteer department and will be used to maintain community fire prevention and safety programs and to buy life-saving equipment.

PARISH FEST | Highland

St. James Parish Fest is 6 p.m. to midnight today and 5 p.m. to midnight July 19 at 45th and Kennedy avenues. A silent auction for various items is both days, as well as kids' games and inflatables, homemade food, elephant ears, a beer garden and live entertainment. Nick Danger performs 7 to 11 tonight and High Noon performs 7 to 11 p.m. July 19. A cash raffle with $10,000 in prizes is available; the drawing is 10 p.m. July 19. Casino night with free admission is available both nights; participants must be 21 years old.

BAKE SALE | Hammond

A yard sale and bake sale are planned 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at Hessville Bible Church, 6518 Grand Blvd. Lots of miscellaneous items will be sold. Proceeds will be used for two heaters for the church to help lower heating costs.

A huge garage sale will be held by Christopher, Vikki, and Jerry Mize from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 26 at 6702 Ohio Ave., with all proceeds going to this year's Alzheimer's Memory Walk. Baby clothes, collectables, Longaberger baskets, Birkenstock sandals, Precious Moments and Boyd's Bear figurines, books, toys, CD's, albums, clothes, and household items. The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk will take place Sept. 20 at Hidden Lake Park, 6355 Broadway in Merrillville.

Adults who sing, play an instrument, or recite poetry may perform in front of their peers at the Hammond Public Library's Adult Open Mic. The program is at 6 p.m. July 22 at the main library, 564 State St. A signup sheet is posted outside the Community Room at 5:30 p.m.

CAR SHOW | Crown Point

Road Hog Corvette Club presents its third annual Road Hog Car Show July 19 at Buddy and Pals, on Randolph Street, just north of 109th Avenue. Registration, which costs $15, is from noon to 4 p.m., with the show starting at 1 p.m. Trophies and awards will be given out at 6 p.m. All Corvettes, street rods, trucks and U.S. muscle cars are welcome; no imports. A beer garden, food and music will be available throughout the event.
