LANSING

Lansing police seeking information in burglary

Lansing Police are investigating a burglary that happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 3500 block of 172nd Place.

The homeowner discovered the burglary when she returned home and called police, Lansing Detective Lt. Dan Sylvester said. Police have two suspects in custody, he said.

Anyone with information about the burglary should contact Lansing Police Detective Patrick O'Brien at (708) 895-7150.

Nicor presents exhibit on natural gas safety

Nicor Gas will participate in fire department open houses this month. It will present Natural Gas: Safety At Home, an exhibit to provide information about natural gas safety at home.

The public is invited to participate in the event, which covers a variety of home safety measures that help prevent fires.

Nicor Gas will display hands-on exhibits, such as examples of replacing brass appliance connectors.

In addition, each fire station will raffle 12 carbon monoxide detectors. Children can enter a prize drawing for a Lego Fire Station after answering a few simple questions about natural gas safety.

Open houses are planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Crete Township Fire Protection District's Station 2, 25048 Klemme in Crete; from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Calumet City Fire Department's Station 2, 1250 Pulaski; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harvey Fire Department, 15600 Center Ave.

This is the fourth year Nicor Gas has supported fire department open houses. For information, visit nicorgas.com.

CRETE

Bark Walk is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday

The South Suburban Humane Society Bark Walk steps off Sunday at Willard Woods Park, 515 First St.

Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk and fun fair are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Activities include behaviorist demonstrations, pet contests, costume contest, 50-50 raffle, silent auction, children's games with prizes, face painting and pets available for adoption through the society.

Registration is $20 for adults and children or $25 the day of the event. Forms can be downloaded at sshspets.org. Registration includes T-shirt, dog bandana breakfast, lunch and a goody bag to the first 100 dogs. Additional items may be bought at the fair.

All proceeds from the event will go to the society, which receives no funding from the government or the Humane Society of the United States.

Department of Aging aided 147,900 in '08

The Illinois Department of Aging assisted more than 147,900 seniors and their caregivers through its Senior HelpLine during fiscal year 2008, which ended June 30.

Senior HelpLine staff works with callers to help them locate services in their community, evaluate needs and answer questions, links them to local case management services and provides information and assistance.

Many of the calls are questions from older adults and caregivers about prescription assistance benefits, according to a news release. Staff provide information about the state's pharmaceutical assistance program, Illinois Cares Rx and helps individuals better understand how the program coordinates with federal Medicare Part D.

CHICAGO

Saint Xavier will host race during homecoming

Help kick off Saint Xavier University's homecoming weekend with the eighth annual Cougar 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The race will start and finish at Saint Xavier's Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St., and travel through the heart of Evergreen Park. All participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and a free ticket upon request to the homecoming football game against Walsh University, of Ohio.

Participants can register online at signmeup.com/60059. Individual registration fees are $20 for runners/walkers and $15 for SXU students.

Registration on the day of the race will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at a cost of $25 at SXU's Shannon Center. CARA members will pay $22.50, and SXU students will pay $20.

Free refreshments will be provided for all participants, including bagels, muffins, fruit, cookies, coffee and water. Race participants also may enjoy free services such as chair massages, blood pressure checks and stretching.
