ST. JOHN | A building collapse Thursday afternoon injured two construction workers.
One man was taken to St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point with injuries that weren't life-threatening, and the other refused transport, Town Manager Steve Kil said.
The men were part of a crew installing a truss roof system on a commercial building near U.S. 231 and Parrish Avenue. Emergency crews were called to the scene of the building collapse at 2:06 p.m., Police Chief Fred Frego said.
Kil said the truss system on the roof collapsed. He said he didn't know the name of the contractor and didn't have any information about the injured workers.
The project is at a standstill until the incident is investigated, Kil said.
"I ordered the construction of the building stopped until a report can be prepared as to why the accident occurred and what steps are going to be taken to ensure this doesn't happen again," he said, adding the town's building and planning department will review the contractor's plan for installation of the truss system.
Kil said he couldn't recall the last time there was a serious accident on a construction site in town.
