LANSING | Nicole Lofgren turned her dream into a reality and recently shared her experiences with students at Memorial Junior High School in Lansing.
A graduate of Memorial herself, Lofgren went on to study zoology at Western Illinois University and then pursued the bigger goal.
Having always had an interest in animals and especially primates, Lofgren eventually secured loans that enabled her to make a trip to Southern Africa and volunteer with other students and professionals on federally protected game reserves.
Her work included time in the Republic of South Africa as a volunteer at the Center for Animal Rehabilitation and Education, an animal preserve near Kruger Park dedicated to injured and orphaned baboons.
Lofgren's trip to Memorial came at the request of her former teacher, Tim Sandow, who asked her to return to share her experiences with more than 600 middle school students.
During Lofgren's several months of research, she was able to document her trip with hundreds of slides of the land, flora, fauna and activities in and around her camps.
