HOBART | The City Council plans to draft a resolution encouraging the Indiana Legislature to have a special session regarding the property tax issue.
The resolution also will ask the Lake County Council to seriously consider the ramifications of the proposed 1 percent income tax and ensure that, if the proposal passes, the funds be distributed equitably.
Councilman Tom Ehrhardt, R-1st, proposed the resolution after seeing that the Merrillville Town Council had passed a similar resolution. Councilman John Brezik, D-5th, also favored the resolution. Brezik said he also would consult with other councils in the area to see if they would consider a similar measure.
Ehrhardt said the resolution was necessary because of all the talk about the reassessment, the proposed 1 percent income tax, trending, possible tax caps and other tax issues.
"There are a lot of unknowns," he said. "We need to do something proactive rather than wait for something to be pushed down our throats."
Clerk-Treasurer Deb Longer said she would work with the city attorney to draft the resolution to present to the council.
"We have to create a solid, strong voice for the county," Brezik said.
