HAMMOND | Region students who participate in an after-school music program participated in a workshop led by the Northwest Indiana Symphony's principal trombonist.
Joseph Rodriguez headed up the workshop last month for the Books, Brushes and Bands for education program at the Hammond Public Library.
The students worked on tone production, including embouchure, breathing, posture and techniques that affect overall sound production, according to a news release.
Rodrigruez also worked with students to emphasize the importance of playing in time and in tune and with a great sound.
The young musicians play the trombone, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, flute, snare drums and xylophone.
After the lessons, Rodriguez talked about his experience as a musician and joined the students in a performance in a concert.
The workshop was in conjunction with the symphony's education department. Schools can host a workshop or a related educational event. For information, call Leane Cerven at (219) 836-0525 or e-mail education@NISOorchestra.org.
