Floodwaters poured into homes in Munster and elsewhere along the Little Calumet River in mid-September.

Now flood relief will pour into Munster's Centennial Park this Saturday in the form of Pack the Park.

Sponsored by the Munster Civic Foundation, the community event offers family friendly activities, including live music, food, a beer garden and family activities, said John Reed, a partner with Abrahamson, Reed & Bilse law firm in Hammond.

"We hope to attract more than 1,000 visitors," said Reed, a Munster resident. "Our goal is to raise over $50,000 for the Munster Civic Foundation to support those affected by the flood."

It runs from 2 to 10 p.m. at Centennial Park on Calumet Avenue north of Main Street.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, ages 2 to 18. Munster residents whose homes were damaged by the floods are invited to attend free of charge.

Tickets are available at the clerk-treasurer's office at Munster Town Hall, 1005 Ridge Road. Munster flood victims should show an ID with a home address to receive free admission. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Festivalgoers also can buy tickets at the door.

For more information, call Town Hall at (219) 836-8810 or the clerk-treasurer's office at (219) 836-6940.

Bands with connections to the Calumet Region have signed up to play during the event as a donation, Reed said. Some bands' members are from Munster and others are from Porter County.

To date those bands include Pistols at Dawn with Julian Mertz, who grew up in Munster along the Little Calumet River; The John Wasem Band; Awesome Gary from Chicago; Land of Atlantis; Los Cordobas; Planetary Blues Band from Valparaiso; and The Guffs with brothers Dejan and Goran Kraji, who hail from Munster.

Local restaurants are planning to serve festival fare and Calumet Brewery will host a beer tent.

For the younger set, there'll be bounce houses, face painting and clowns to entertain.

"We may have 50/50 raffles and other events," Reed said. "It should be a really fun time."

In addition, the Munster Civic Foundation is seeking sponsors for the Pack the Park event. Sponsorship levels range from a $10,000 premier sponsor to a $250 sponsorship.

Donations also are being accepted for flood relief by the Munster Civic Foundation, Reed said. Checks can be written to the Munster Civic Foundation (with "flood relief" in the memo section) and sent to Munster Town Hall, 1005 Ridge Road, Munster, IN 46321.

"We've collected over $20,000 so far," he said.
