LANSING

Village to buy new body armor for police officers

The Village Board voted 5-0 on Tuesday to buy body armor for the Police Department. In all, the police will get 65 new bulletproof vests to replace five-year-old body armor, on which the warranty is about to expire.

The Village Board voted to buy the body armor from Strickers Corp., one of two companies that submitted a bid. Strickers is offering two different types of vests at a cost of $580 and $525, and police officers will be allowed to decide for themselves which vest they want to use.

Half of the money for the vests will come from a federal grant, while funds that Lansing police seized as part of drug-related arrests will pay the remaining cost.

Officials vote to replace village emergency siren

The Village Board approved this week the purchase of a new emergency alarm system, designed to warn local residents of dangerous weather conditions such as tornadoes and other hazardous situations.

Village trustees voted 5-0 in favor of spending $90,603 to buy an alarm system from Crestwood-based Braniff Communications Inc.

The new system consists of four alarms set up at points around Lansing. It replaces a system that is technologically antiquated, with parts dating back to the mid-1940s and a signal that residents often cannot hear.

Police and Fire Department officials previously said the new system's technology is guaranteed to provide a signal that will be heard throughout the village in the event of a weather-related emergency.
