VALPARAISO | A year after pleading guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal crash, Valparaiso resident Aaron Luchene was back behind bars Friday on accusations he violated his probation by using cocaine.
Porter Senior Judge Raymond Kickbush agreed during a morning hearing to allow the 34-year-old to bond out of jail on a $1,000 cash bond and return to home detention if he also agrees to take part in alcohol and drug treatment.
A hearing on the request to revoke Luchene's probation was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 12 before Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford.
Luchene is accused of striking the rear of a northbound car May 14, 2006, at Ind. 49 and Interstate 94, and forcing it into the southbound lanes and into a motorcycle driven by Kenneth Chapman, 54, of Portage, who died in the collision.
He also is accused of fleeing the scene. His truck was found damaged in the ditch on Interstate 94, east of Ind. 49.
Luchene turned himself in to police a few days later. Police said Luchene had a suspended driver's license at the time of the collision.
He was sentenced in August to 120 days in jail, day reporting, one year of home detention and formal probation.
