SCHERERVILLE | The Lake County Council voted 7-0 Tuesday to deny Hyles-Anderson College a zoning use variance to build a 199-foot radio antenna on its Schererville campus.

The college at 8400 Burr St. is associated with the First Baptist Church of Hammond. It wants to launch a Christian radio station.

Councilman Larry Blanchard, R-Crown Point, said the antenna at the proposed location would be a hardship on nearby residents who signed a petition against the tower.

Ann Johnson, who lives near the proposed site, said it would be an eyesore that depreciates the value of her property.

Blanchard said the college could move the antenna to another location.
