No one injured; suspects tell cops 'mean' looks led to incident in Hessville
HAMMOND | Two young men were in custody Wednesday after a daylight shooting spree near a Hessville park that was allegedly sparked by hard looks in a convenience store.
No one was injured when the passenger in a red Pontiac Sunfire emptied a .22-caliber pistol at another car shortly before 3 p.m. Monday across the street from Gibson Park in the 6200 block of Delaware Avenue. One round did hit a house.
The car was quickly stopped by police, and two 18-year-old Hammond residents, Daniel Boyer and Jeremy Cintron, were charged Wednesday with multiple counts of criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.
Boyer admitted to police that he shot at the men, according to the affidavit filed by prosecutors, because one of them had been "mean mugging" him when both were inside Hessville Meat Market in the 2900 block of 165th Street.
The driver of the other car told police he and his passenger had not given anyone any "mean mugging," and were driving home from the store when the red Pontiac pulled in front of them and the passenger started shooting.
Cintron, the driver of the Pontiac, told police that he had given his pistol to Boyer, but told him to shoot it in the air, according to the affidavit.
A .22-caliber semiautomatic Barretta was found under the front passenger seat of the Pontiac after the men were pulled over, police said, and one bullet casing was found at the base of the back window, and two more casings were found in the snow on the car.
Both men were in the Lake County Jail on Wednesday afternoon, with bond set at $75,000 for Cintron, and $6,500 for Boyer.
