EAST CHICAGO

Police probe shooting among romantic rivals

A Carey-Drummond neighborhood resident was shot Thursday afternoon by an alleged romantic rival, police said.

The 35-year-old resident reported to police that a Chicago man approached him in the 3900 block of Carey Street about 1:30 p.m. and threatened to shoot him because they both were involved with the same woman.

Shortly after officers who had responded to the initial report left, the 46-year-old man returned and started shooting, witnesses said.

The resident was shot once in the left forearm and was treated at a local hospital and released.

Two neighbors in the 3800 block of Drummond Street told police their homes had been struck by gunfire, and detectives reported finding two gunshots to each house, as well as bullet fragments.

A third neighbor reported that her Buick LeSabre had been struck by a bullet.

The suspect and two companions fled the area in a white Chevrolet sedan, witnesses said.
