MUM SALE | Crown Point

Friends of St. Anthony Hospice is taking preorders for its second mum sale. Last year, the group sold more than 800 mums. This year, mums will come planted in one-gallon containers. Red, purple and yellow varieties will be available for $5 per plant. All proceeds generated from this year's plant sale will help support St. Anthony Hospice patients and family members. Mums must be preordered and prepaid before Sept. 2. All plants will be available for pick up at Holy Family Child Care, 203 Franciscan Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13.

GOLF OUTING | Hobart

Hobart Little League will hold a golf outing Aug. 16 at Indian Ridge Golf Course, Breakfast will be served at 7 a.m. and a shot gun start is at 8 a.m. Cost is $75 for a round of golf, food during and after the round and prizes for the winning foursome. All proceeds benefit the Hobart Little League.

MEET LHS NIGHT | Lowell

Parents are invited to Meet LHS Night at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at Lowell High School, 2051 E. Commercial Ave. Class schedules will be available at 6:45 p.m. in the North Lobby. Following opening remarks in the auditorium, parents will spend seven minutes in each of their child's classes, where topics addressed will include what the teacher expects of each student, what teachers should expect from the parent and what expectations parents have of the teacher. Franciscan Communities at St. Anthony Campus will be hosting a seminar entitled, "Smoothing the Transition to a Retirement Community" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at St. Anthony Assisted Home, at 203 Franciscan Drive. St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary will host its ninth annual Touch of Elegance Luncheon at noon Sept. 13 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30. BENEFIT GOLF | Hobart

Dunes Leathernecks Detachment of the Marine Corps League will sponsor its fifth annual golf outing Aug. 23 at Duck Creek Golf Course, 636 N. 700 West. The four-player scramble format will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Cost is $75 per person and includes greens fee, use of cart, door prizes, beer, pop, food on course and a pork chop dinner. Proceeds go to the Porter County Food Pantries. Hole sponsorships are being accepted at $50 a hole. Registration deadline is Aug. 14.

MEMORY WALK | Merrillville

The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk will take place Sept. 20 at Hidden Lake Park, 6355 Broadway. Enjoy music by Nashville singer/songwriter Jason Sanders; a Moon Walk, face painting, and balloons for children, along with hot dogs and beverages. Memory Walk is a noncompetitive fundraising and awareness walk designed to support the mission of the Alzheimer's Association. Each year, participants sign up as teams or individuals, and collect pledges from their friends, family, coworkers, and others to raise as many dollars as possible. Grant application packets are currently available from the Crown Point Community Foundation, Inc. with an application form and guidelines for proposal evaluation. The application deadline date is Sept. 1, 2008.Grants from the Crown Point Community Foundation, Inc. Endowment Fund will be made to organizations and community projects which impact the area served by the foundation. Fields of Interest which will be considered for funding include: education, health and human services, civic affairs, preservation, conservation, arts and culture. The Crown Point Community Foundation is interested in funding projects that will improve the quality of life for citizens in the Crown Point area, according to Patricia Huber, president/executive director of the foundation. VENDORS WANTED | Gary

Fest in the First District festival sponsored by the First District Precinct Organization is set for noon to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 on Lake Street in the city's Miller section. Free toys, balloons and face painting for kids will be available, as well as clowns, food booths and arts and crafts. Performances kick off with the Emerson Jazz Ensemble and continues with the Jesse White Tumblers, Ronald McDonald magic show, Wirt championship ROTC drill team and drum line, Motown band, gospel music and classic auto shot behind JJ's. SATURDAY MARKET | Gary

Spirit Land Saturday Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 16 and Sept. 20 at Spirit of God, 1010 Roosevelt St. The outdoor market will feature handcrafted merchandise from artist from and around the community, fresh fruits and vegetables and food vendors. Local musicians, along with gospel and other choirs, will participate. Poetry and dance and talking with the artists about their works is expected to take place. The 22nd annual golf outing to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at White Hawk Country Club, 1001 White Hawk Drive off Summit Street. A four-person scramble format is followed by a social event featuring hearty hors d'oeuvres. Cost is $200 per golfer; hole sponsorships are also available. This story of southern charm involves Molly Petree, who has lost most of her family in the Civil War and moves into her uncle's estate, enters boarding school and becomes a teacher. Facing a future with an unfaithful husband, her life comes full circle when she returns to the estate to care for her father's friend. Refreshments will be served. Copies are available for checkout.

DROP OFF WASTE | Gary

City of Gary residents have two new locations to drop off construction and demolition debris and nonhazardous waste free of charge. Dumpsters are available at 2650 E. 5th Ave. (turn left at north end of Interstate 65, cross South Shore Railroad tracks, turn left at Illiana Block & Brick sign, turn right at open gate and turn left after gate to look for two dumpsters), and 7318 W. 15th Ave., one block east of Cline Ave. Driver's license needed to prove residency, no commercial dumping. Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday though Friday and 9 a.m. to noon the first Saturday every month. No batteries, appliances, tires or yard waste. Yard waste can be brought to the transfer station at 2900 Gary Ave., East Chicago (exit at Gary Avenue from Cline Avenue north, travel 1-1/2 blocks and turn left).

JOBS FOR SENIORS | Indiana

Low-income Hoosiers 55 and older who want to work but can't find a job can get assistance from Experience Works. Paid training assignments and job-placement services are available for those unemployed, retired and wanting to return to work, or who have never had a job. Experience Works will pay a worker's wages while they learn new job skills at a community service organization, then help the worker prepare a resume and go for interviews. Experience Works has helped thousands of Hoosier seniors get jobs.
