She faced limited camera time for the second night in row on Fox's "American Idol," but Amy Davis still was a winner Wednesday night.

Now Davis, 25, a Lowell native, is on her way to Los Angeles for next week's live broadcasts on Fox as one of the final 24 singers competing.

Many in the pool of 50 possibles whittled from Tuesday's 164 finalists were dramatized on the small screen Wednesday during the one-hour show with tears, family hugs and footage of their face-to-face showdown with television's most intimidating trio: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

However, Davis' advancement moment came as just a quick three-second camera glimpse of the 2000 Lowell High School graduate's wide-eyed amazement as her name was announced to continue to the next round, accented by the off-camera sound of Abdul clapping and approving with her usual blowzy "yea!"

In addition to a few quick earlier frame shots of Davis sharing supportive claps for her fellow competitors, viewers later witnessed Davis hugging and comforting cut finalist/favored underdog Josiah Leming, 18, the Oliver Twist of "American Idol Season 7," who told viewers during his audition "he lives in his car."

Wednesday's telecast, which actually was filmed in Hollywood during November and December, ended with Davis and the 23 other finalists ramping up their personalities while dancing into the eye of the camera lens, as each was formally introduced to at-home fans.

"Next week, it's the viewing audience who calls the shots for who stays and who goes home," host Ryan Seacrest reminded before the closing credits.

What's next

The Top 12 males and the Top 12 females will perform in two-hour episodes airing on Tuesda and Wednesday. Those performances will be the first to allow audience voting, which means you can expect the elimination of two men and two women on February 21.

BREAKOUT

Finalist rivals

Here are a few of the other contestants Amy Davis, 25, will face on Fox next week:

* Brooke White, 24, of Mesa, Ariz., the crying nanny who says she has never watched an R-rated movie.

* Danny Noriega, 17, of Aruza, Calif., the artsy kid with attitude who almost made it as a finalist last season, but got cut in the final 164.

* Jason Castro, 29, of Dallas, Texas, a musician who sports dreadlocks and loves to play acoustic guitar.

* Ramiele Malubay, 19, of Miramar, Fla., the delicate flower with a blossoming powerful voice.

* Michael Johns, 28, of Australia, who flaunts model good looks and a distinct rugged sound.

* Syesha Mercado, 20, of Miami, Fla., the diva who lost her voice during auditions but still moved on.

* David Hernandez, 24, of Phoenix, Ariz., the clean-cut face and talent, who so far has been disliked by nasty Simon Cowell.

* Joanne Borgella, 25, of Hoboken, N.J., a plus-sized model boasting a versatile singing range.
