SPAGHETTI SUPPER | Crown Point

St. Mary Catholic Community School will hold its 46th annual Spaghetti Supper, including lunch, on Nov. 12 at 405 E. Joliet St. Along with its famous spaghetti and special sauce, Caesar salad, Italian bread, coffee or milk and a homemade dessert, diners can visit The Country Store for crafts, gifts and St. Mary's items. First prize in the Spaghetti Supper Raffle is $2,500, second prize is $1,000, and third prize is $500. Tickets for the raffle are $5 each or 6 for $25. Tickets are available through the day of the supper. Dinner tickets are $8 for adults 15 and older and $5 for children 5 to 14 and seniors 60 and older. Younger children eat free. Lunch hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner is served 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. for dine in and carry-out meals. Delivery service will also be available; have lunch delivered to your office. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance in the school office.

American Legion Post 66 is having a spaghetti and salad bar dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at 132 N. Wiggs. Adults eat for $8. It costs $7 for children and seniors. Carry-outs are available. Desserts will be sold.

HOLIDAY READING | Munster

South Shore Arts' 15th Annual Holiday Reading with John Cain will be held Nov. 18 at South Shore Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Cain will read "A Christmas Story" by Jean Shepard. Dutch heritage | Hammond

Celebrating Dutch Heritage through music, dance, traditional food and cultural exhibits is the focus of a program Purdue University Calumet is hosting Nov. 15. The three-hour celebration begins at 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall of the university's Student Union & Library. The group, Dutch History Live, from Holland, Mich., will perform songs, skits, a wooden shoe dance and a craft demonstration.

Additionally, the Purdue Calumet Theatre Company will perform a short drama based on readings from "The Diary of Anne Frank." The Theatre Company also will perform "The Diary of Callie" about Dutch-Americans sheltering escaped slaves in pre-Emancipation America. Authentic Dutch cuisine will be catered by Van Til's Delicatessen and Almira's Bakery. Several local Dutch-American businesses will have displays. Admission is free.

TREE LIGHTING | Merrillville

Fourth Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will be hosted from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 4 by Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7535 Taft St. Open to all interested families, whether they held services at the chapel or not, the event will honor those who have lost a loved one during the past year, and each family will receive a personalized Guardian Angel Ornament to hang on the tree in memory of their loved one. To receive an ornament, families must respond by Nov. 15. Space is limited.

ORIGINAL OPERA | Crown Point

Sixty-six third graders who formed the Bee Cool Opera Company will present their original opera, "Word POWer," at 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Solon Robinson Elementary School, 601 Pettibone St. This year's show centers on a fictional school and how students react to the news that budget cuts are forcing the closure of the local animal shelter. Students wrote, composed, designed, publicized and will stage the show themselves. Admission is free, but audience members are asked to bring an item (pet food, treats, pet toys, leashes, cleaning supplies, blankets) to be donated to a local animal shelter.

Toys for Tots | Hammond

Napleton River Oaks Cadillac, 6131 Hohman Ave., has teamed up with Toys for Tots. The site will accept new and unwrapped toys for boys and girls through Dec. 15. Those who donate, will receive a $10 coupon redeemable in the service department. Toy drop-off hours are 9 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Haunted by his past and afraid for his future, a doctor keeps the secret of a Down Syndrome baby from his wife after she gives birth to twins, instead telling her that their daughter died and only their son lived.
