Cookbook | Hazel Crest
The auxiliary at Advocate South Suburban Hospital is selling a cookbook. Three hundred recipes have been collected from auxilians and their families, associates, physicians and friends and compiled into this 144-page edition, titled "Tasteful Treasures II." The cookbook contains a diverse array of recipes including appetizers, main dishes, desserts, soups/salads and more. Recipes are sorted by each contributor's name. The book also contains a variety of helpful hints, quick fixes, food quantities and cooking terms.
This cookbook is on sale for $15 and may be purchased at the hospital. All proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will benefit the Advocate South Suburban Hospital Emergency Department's Sexual Assault Treatment Center.

Today and Aug. 22, the Crete Public Library District will hold Teacher Appreciation Open Houses from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the library, 1177 N. Main St. Teachers who live or work in Crete are invited to stop by to learn about the new services, materials and databases available to them and their students. There will be refreshments, goodie bags and raffle drawings.

Paradise party | Lansing
A Cheeseburger in Paradise party is from 6 p.m. to midnight Aug. 16 at Lansing Knights of Columbus Hall, 178th and Lorenz Avenue. Tickets are $10 per adult. Local recording artist Lois Kaye will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. The Relics will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight and there will be all-you-can-eat cheeseburgers.

The Chicago Park District's Mann Park, 13000 S. Exchange in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood, is looking for vendors for its annual outdoor flea market to be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13. Purchase space by Sept. 1 for $15. After Sept. 1, it will be $20. Vendors provide their own tables.

Bus tour | Lansing, Chicago
The Lansing Historical Society is sponsoring a bus tour to the historic Pullman district in Chicago. It's from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 20. It costs $75 per person for the visit to America's first planned industrial community, listed as a National Historic District. The well preserved area was built in 1880 by George M. Pullman for the production of his famous sleeper rail car. The tour includes a visit to the Pullman Visitors Center, Greenstone Church, Hotel Florence, Factory Building and a tour of a Pullman home. A gourmet box lunch is served in the hotel. The day includes a historical tour of town and surrounding area. Deadline for reservations is Sept. 6.

YARD SALE | Hammond
A community yard sale will take place Sept. 20 as part of the third annual Bizarre Bazaar event taking place in downtown Hammond. The opportunity to sell yesterday's treasures is open to all, however, space is limited. The Stuff-A-Palooza sale is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advance registration is required. A $10 fee applies. The community yard sale is one activity of the second Bizarre Bazaar event presented by the Downtown Hammond Council. The outdoor one-day festival also includes pie baking and salsa eating contests, food vendors, chess and bean bag tournaments, canine costume contest, musical entertainment, classic car show and numerous kids activities. Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. and Hammond Parks and Recreation Department invite all area residents to a free movie in the park from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 22 at Pulaski Park, 3723 Sheffield Ave. Bring the entire family to enjoy a popular animated movie about a rat who loves to cook. FOOD VENDORS | Highland
The Highland Chamber of Commerce is accepting food vendor applications for the Midwest Zest Fest, set for Sept. 5 to 7. The cost is $450 for a 10-by-10 booth space (tents, tables and chairs not provided) and $475 for the first 16 feet of trailer ($125 for every four feet after). Duplicate food vendors are not allowed, so call the chamber to see if an item is already being sold. Space is available for 12 trailers and 16 food booths. Insurance is mandatory and proof of insurance must be turned in with the food vendor contract.

SUMMER CONCERT | Munster
The Incognitos perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 17 as part of the Sounds at Sunset summer concert series held at Heritage Park Gazebo, 1154 Ridge Road. With a song list that spans the last 50 years of music along with today's favorites, distinct vocal harmonies and precision musicianship, The Incognitos are sure to play the right audience pleasing music to get everyone singing along, moving to the beat, or dancing until they drop. Munster Parks and Recreation Department offers a trip Sept. 5 to 7 to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Mich. Participants get picked up at home and taken to Union Station in Chicago to travel via Amtrak. They will stay at the Doubletree Hotel Dearborn. The next day they will enjoy the longest-running car show in the nation, celebrating the 100th birthday of Henry Ford's Model T. More than 500 cars are displayed; explore Greenfield Village, which has more than 90 historic buildings. The village is next to the Henry Ford Museum, which has more than three centuries of technological changes. The fee is $589 for singles, $489 for doubles and $469 for triples. MUM SALE | Crown Point
Friends of St. Anthony Hospice is taking preorders for its second mum sale. Last year, the group sold more than 800 mums. This year, mums will come planted in one-gallon containers. Red, purple and yellow varieties will be available for $5 per plant. All proceeds generated from this year's plant sale will help support St. Anthony Hospice patients and family members. Mums must be preordered and prepaid before Sept. 2. All plants will be available for pick up at Holy Family Child Care, 203 Franciscan Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13.
