Home Garden Series

Taltree Arboretum and Gardens will present a 14-course series on home gardening beginning in January. Experts from throughout the area will speak on topics that include landscape design, soils, woody plant and herbaceous ornamental selection, and garden maintenance.

Jan. 10 – HGS 1: Getting Started by Renee Caprile

Jan. 17 – HGS 2: Landscape Design & Construction

Jan. 31 –HGS 3: Get the Dirt on Soils

Classes all run from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays at Taltree Arboretum and Garden classroom. Cost for each class is $12 for non-members and $10 for Taltree members. Houseplants and tropicals workshop series

10 a.m. to noon Jan. 10, Feb. 15 and March 15 - Whether you call them houseplants or tropicals, these heat-lovers hold up to the heat of summer after cooling their roots inside until the next spring arrives.

Jan. 10: Tropicals & Houseplants: Propagation -- Taltree’s Bill Neinast will demonstrate division, tip cutting, woody cuttings and air layering methods for propagating houseplants. Participants will meet in the classroom for an overview before moving on to the greenhouse for a demonstration of the techniques used to make more plants. Class fee: members $5, nonmembers $10 Pre-register by calling Taltree at (219) 462-0025.

Bird watchers

Meet with fellow bird watchers from 1 to 3 p.m. jan. 10. The Taltree Birding Club will meet in the office where members will make pine cone suet cakes to offer for sale at the Porter County Master Gardener gardening show on Jan. 24. Membership is $10.
