VALPARAISO | While Americans enjoy their everyday freedoms, the Rev. Wayne Rhodes, of First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso, said they should thank a U.S. military veteran.

Rhodes delivered the keynote speech at a Veteran's Day ceremony Tuesday at Foundations Meadows Park. About 50 residents, veterans and city and military personnel attended the event, which was originally scheduled to be held outdoors at the service memorial but moved inside the park's maintenance and service center because of inclement weather.

Parks Director Steve Doniger and Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas also spoke at the event, which included the playing of taps, posting of the colors and a moment of silence.

"The ceremony today is rather humble but significant," Doniger said. "We're here to honor not just those who have served, but the generations who will come after them and serve as well."

Rhodes, who served in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, has ministered to wounded troops who've come home from Iraq.

"The people we honor today wrote a blank check made payable to the United States in an amount up to and including their lives," Rhodes said. "Veterans are both uncomfortable and appreciative on Veterans Day.

They're uncomfortable because they come from a world that taught them that what they did was just their job."

Valparaiso resident Ernie Trembley, a U.S. Army veteran who trained troops during the Korean War, was among those attending the event.

"(Veteran's Day reminds us) we still have our freedom," he said. "I think it should be a day we honor each other."

Costas said it's important to take time to reflect on freedoms, which came with much sacrifice. He believes that every citizen's right to vote is a tangible example of the freedoms ensured by those who have fought for the country.

"It was great to see so many people vote in the recent election," Costas said. "There's only one reason to vote. You vote to honor the people who gave you the right to vote."
