Cause of Christmas Eve blaze remains under investigation
SOUTH HOLLAND | Firefighters from 15 departments battled a blaze in South Holland late Wednesday night into early Christmas morning that spread from a garage to the home it was attached to, according to the South Holland Fire Department.
The department responded to a call at 11:34 p.m. in the 1900 block of East 171st Place, a news release said. Because of the frigid weather conditions and how quickly the fire was spreading, it was upgraded to a third-level alarm, prompting increased aid from neighboring departments.
The residents were home at the time of the fire and escaped without injury.
The fire was under control by about 3 a.m. Thursday, the department said. One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene.
Because of the frigid conditions, a Pace bus was called to serve as a warming unit for firefighters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and an official said more information wouldn't be available until Friday at the earliest.
The home remained boarded up Thursday evening with what appeared to be a desk and other items scattered outside.
A woman, who lives on the same block as the home that burned, didn't give the name of the residents, but said they are a husband and wife in their 50s or 60s with at least one child.
The release said firefighting operations were hampered by frigid temperatures causing a nearby fire hydrant to freeze and a heavy ice buildup in the area.
