BAT TOURNAMENT | E.C.

Mayor George Pabey and Little League District 1 Present the Mayor's Twin City Classic All Wooden Bat Tournament Aug. 7 to 12 at E.J. Block Stadium. Participating teams are from Indiana Harbor, East Chicago, Lake Station, Black Oak, South Haven, Hobart, Merrillville and Portage. Games will be played at 5:30 and 8 p.m. Aug. 7, 8 and 11 and at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10. The championship game is at 6 p.m. Aug. 12. Teams may be subject to change.

ACHIEVERS PICNIC | Gary

African American Achievers Youth Corps, a nonprofit organization of middle and high school African-America males, sponsors its annual picnic from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 9. The picnic is held with the annual Froebel-Roosevlt picnic held at the Froebel School campus at 15th and Madison Street. The Achievers is a mentoring, tutorial, entrepreneurial and counseling program. The group meets at 1 p.m. Saturdays at Indiana University Northwest, followed by an hour of basketball. Parents interested in enrolling their sons should call Vernon Smith.

Community Preschool will have an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7. The school is at Woodmar United Methodist Church, 7320 Northcote. It offers morning classes for children 2 to 5 years old. WEIGHT LOSS | Griffith

A community weight loss challenge continues in the evenings at First United Methodist Church, 400 W. 44th Place. The program offers free tips on proper nutrition, food choices and encourages exercise; weekly personal coaching and a metabolism test are included. Meetings will be at 6:30 p.m. Mondays at the church. The first session will focus on the rules of the challenge and how the program works. Attendees still can register for the challenge. Through Sept. 8 the fee is $29; afterward, it's $15. Most of that fee will go to the three people who lose the most weight at the end of the challenge.

MESSIAH WORLD | Hammond

Messiah World presents a One in a Millions Gathering from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at Martin Luther King Park. It's a fight against spirits of murder, politics and racism. A live gospel follows the speakers. Minister Teyan McCoy, of Hammond, has been proclaiming God's word since 1993. Messiah World includes the clothing line Messiah Wear International and the ministry God's People United; McCoy meets with pastors from various denominations for celebration services the first Saturday of each month.

SOFTBALL TRYOUTS | Crown Point

South County Tornadoes will hold tryouts for its 14U travel, fast-pitch softball team from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 9-10 and Aug. 16-17 at the St. Matthias Church field on Burrell Drive just west of Crown Point High School. Only serious players need apply.

FREE IMMUNIZATIONS | Gary

City of Gary Department of Health and Human Services will offer free immunizations, tuberculosis testing and lead screening for school-age children from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Genesis Convention Center, One Genesis Center Plaza. Children must be accompanied by an adult and bring their complete immunization records.

CANAL TRIP | Munster

Munster Parks and Recreation Department offers a trip Sept. 12 at north central Illinois' newest attractions: the LaSalle Canal Boat and Lock 16 Visitor's Center in LaSalle. The canal, a 96-mile hand-dug waterway connecting the Illinois River with Lake Michigan, opened in 1848. Enjoy a boat ride on a replica 1800s canal boat pulled by horses on the IM Canal, while costumed guides tell the story of how the Canal changed Illinois history. Later, enjoy lunch at the Starved Rock Lodge before returning home via motorcoach. The fee is $70 for residents, $75 for nonresidents and $68 for Keen-Ager members. EXERCISE CENTER | Whiting

The Whiting Community Center, run by the Whiting Parks and Recreation Department, offers a variety of land and water aerobic classes, indoor pool and running track use and other activities.
