Preschool open house | Lansing
All God's Children preschool will have an open houses from 1 to 3 p.m. July 20. Ages 3 to 5 can attend the preschool, which runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children can attend two, three or five days a week at First United Methodist Church, 18420 Burnham Ave.

Food drive | South Holland
The South Holland Professional Firefighters Association is sponsoring a Christmas in July food drive. Items can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. during July at South Holland Fire Station 1, 16230 Wausau Ave. All nonperishable food items will be accepted.

Library Olympics | Calumet City
Ages 6 and older can attend Library Olympics from 2 to 3 p.m. July 23 at Calumet City Public Library, 660 Manistee Ave. Register for this event. Kids will test their abilities with balance, throwing, bouncing and other skills.

Karate | Calumet City
Wado-Ki Karate, offered by the Calumet Memorial Park District for ages 6 to adult, helps build discipline and promote fitness. The next session will be from July 23 until Sept. 24. Soccer camp | Crete
Crete Park District's Summer Soccer Camp for ages 5 to 10 will be led by Crete-Monee High School's soccer coach, Christina Kreil. All levels are welcome from beginners to advanced as instruction will focus on fundamentals and foot skills with a positive coaching attitude. This program will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 28 to Aug. 1 at Heritage Park, 1550 Sangamon St. The fee is $75, while Crete Park District residents pay $50.

Polka picnic | Glenwood
A polka picnic begins at noon July 27 at PACF Farm and Grove, 18600 Glenwood-Thornton Road. Music will be from 2 to 6 p.m. and other activities include free paddle boat rides, bingo, a fishing derby and door prizes. Bring your own lawn chair. Food and beverages will be available and no coolers or BYOB are allowed. Tickets will cost $10 at the gate or $7 in advance. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.

Homeschooling parents are invited to a special breakfast to find out what the library can offer them. Lionel Richie performs at 6 tonight at Ameristar Casino Lakefront. A few thousand tickets to this free concert will be available at the gate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Shuttle service will be offered at Central High School, Carrie Gosch Elementary School, Washington Elementary School, Michigan Avenue near Guthrie and overflow parking at 145th and Railroad, 5200 Indianapolis Blvd. and Commonwealth Avenue. The last shuttle leaves for the concert at 6:30 p.m. and the last shuttle leaves the concert at 10 p.m. Coolers and large umbrellas will not be permitted.

GARDEN TOUR | Munster
Munster Parks and Recreation Department offers a trip Aug. 20 to Chicago Botanic Garden. The motorcoach leaves at 8 a.m. from the Centennial Park north lot, 9701 Calumet Ave., and returns about 5 p.m. The fee is $55 for residents, $60 for nonresidents and $53 for Keen-Ager members. It includes admission, a tram ride, box lunch, 10 percent discount in the garden shop and transportation. The tram ride provides an overview of the garden's 385 acres, including the Japanese Garden, 100-acre oak woodland and the native prairie. Register at Town Hall, 1005 Ridge Road.
