Volunteers gathering this weekend probably won't be able to prepare Christmas care packages for all 185,000 U.S. troops fighting overseas, but they're going to try.

Operation SOS - Support Our Service Members, a newly minted nonprofit service organization, is taking over the Roxana Community Center in East Chicago on Sunday to fill as many boxes as possible for those who can't make it home from Iraq and Afghanistan for the holidays.

"We want to bring joy to the troops who will not be able to celebrate, and bring them light in the spirit of the season," said Highland resident Colleen Aguirre, who heads the new group.

Supporters put together a "wish list" of items most requested by enlisted personnel -- including personal care products, clothing, and snacks -- and plan to send hundreds of 20-pound packages on Monday, so they'll be received before Christmas.

"These men and women are serving our country," said Geraldine Nauracy, of East Chicago, "We should be able to do something for them."

Many local organizations and private citizens have helped the project with donations, Aguirre said, both goods and cash -- particularly needed for the $11-per-box mailing charge.

"We could have gotten them shipped for free if we delivered them to a military base," Aguirre said, "But there aren't any bases around here anymore."

Support for the program has also been strong among local municipalities, industries and veterans groups, she said.

"Our gratitude goes out to all those who are willing to make this a memorable holiday for those who are not here to celebrate with us," Aguirre said.
