CALUMET CITY | Calumet City officials are considering changing the emergency snow removal service for disabled seniors to include disabled people of all ages.

Currently, the city provides snow removal for people 62 years old and older with disabilities when snowfall reaches 4 inches or more, 2nd Ward Leni Wosczynski said.

"Whether they are a senior or not, if they are disabled, these people also need help," she said. "It's something we as a city should be doing."

The Calumet City Council made a motion to direct the city attorney to draft an ordinance that would change the city's snow removal policy during a Calumet City Council meeting this week.

Although it would be an expense to add additional people to the program, Wosczynski said it wouldn't be that bad because the city would only provide snow removal if snow fall was 4 inches or more. The additional cost is something the city will consider when looking at the draft ordinance, she said.

Calumet City resident Susan Lee spoke at the meeting to question why others with disabilities were not included besides seniors. Anyone in Calumet City with a disability should be eligible, she said.
