MEMORIAL RUN | Lowell

American Veterans Motorcycle Rider's Association Chapter 5 Pathfinders will hold its Memorial Poker Run on July 20 in honor of Kenneth Eakins Sr., one of its founding members. Sign in begins at 10 a.m. at V.F.W. Post 6841, 17401 Morse St., with first bike out at 11. Fee is $15 per person and includes meal ticket and one beverage. Food provided at Bozley's, the last stop, .Stops are at the run sponsors, Bar 10, LJ's Bar & Grille, Oasis, Baum's Bridge, & Bozley's. All proceeds go to help veterans in need.

MUSICAL BENEFIT | Merrillville

The July 19 performance of the Broadway musical "Chicago" at the Star Plaza Theatre will be a benefit for St. Jude House. Opening night for this Tony Award winning show, first staged on Broadway in 1975, will raise funds for programming at the Crown Point shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The shelter provides all services, including food, clothing, advocacy, education, and legal support at no charge to those needing assistance. Tickets for the July 19 show, priced at $25 and $20, are available at Star Plaza Theatre Box Office, Ticket Master or St. Jude House. Sponsors are also welcome.A raffle for items with a Chicago theme will be offered during intermission. A display of vintage cars by the Regional Streeters of Indiana Car Club will be held from 5:30 to 7:0 p.m. in the theater parking lot.

CALENDAR NOMINEES | Crown Point

Nominate a breast cancer survivor for the Pink Ribbon Society's 2009 Breast Cancer Survivors' Calendar. The society will hold its Seventh Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Tea on Sept. 28 at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center in Hobart. One of the highlights of the event each year is the introduction of the calendar guys and gals. Submit the nominee's name, year of diagnosis, personal and/or professional accomplishments, and the things in general that make them outstanding. Those submitting a nomination should also submit their phone number in case their nominee is chosen. Deadline for nominations is Aug. 1. DEMENTIA SESSION | Merrillville

Towne Centre Retirement Community will host a free Dementia Seminar and Luncheon on from noon to 1:30 p.m. July 28 at 7250 Arthur Blvd. The guest speaker will be Darren Leavitt, who holds a master's degree in organizational leadership and is certified in both crisis intervention and as a court mediator in Illinois. He will discuss how dementia is a disease that goes beyond the lives of those suffering from it. Reservations are required.

SUMMER RAFFLE | Wheatfield

Friends of the Wheatfield Library are holding a Summer Gift Bag Raffle through July. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5, available at the library, 350 S. Bierma St., and proceeds benefit library programs and materials. Drawing will be held in early August.

FINANCIAL AID | Hobart

Hobart Family YMCA offers financial assistance with membership and program fees for individuals and families with low incomes based on federal poverty guidelines. If a family qualifies for free or reduced cost meals at school, they may qualify for assistance. A sliding fee scale is also available based upon household income and family size, with discounts of 10 to 50 percent available. Proof of income is required to participate.

PIT STOP EVENT | Crown Point

Make a "pit stop" from 4 to 8 p.m.July 24 at Beef O'Brady's, 107th and Broadway, and 15 percent of total sales will be donated to the Nathan C. Splant Foundation benefitting local children and families. The foundation was established in 2007 as a public charity offering assistance and grants to local families in need.

WOMEN'S LUNCHEON | Rensselaer

The Jasper Foundation, Inc. and Newton County Community Foundation will host the annual "Celebration of Women" luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 1 at Curtis Creek Country Club. This year's featured speaker is Lori J. Miller of Francesville, a Christian speaker and author of "Why Not Me?" about her journey of determination and struggles to survive years of battling cancer. The daughter of missionaries, she became a pastor's wife and successful business woman with three children, one of whom is adopted from China. Call for reservations.

ICE CREAM BENEFIT | Crown Point

Winfield/Jerry Ross PTO is sponsoring Cold Stone Creamery Nights on July 23 and Aug. 13. Winfield and Jerry Ross Elementary School families are invited to enjoy ice cream from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cold Stone Creamery, 11 W. 112th Ave., and have a portion of sales donated to the Winfield/Jerry Ross PTO. Coupons indicating PTO affiliation can be downloaded from the Winfield or Jerry Ross school web sites. All proceeds will be used to fun Family Fun events during the 2008-09 school year.

CRAFTERS NEEDED | Crown Point

Crafters and vendors are needed for the covered Bridge Harvest Fest Sept. 26 to 28 at the Lake County Fairgrounds. It's hosted by the fairgrounds and Special Olympics Lake County. Crafts, food, auctions, hay rides and entertainment will be featured. Admission and parking are free. Senior day is Sept. 26. Space is limited.

CANCER BENEFIT | Hammond

A breast cancer benefit in honor of Mary Garza is set for 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 2 at LaRosa's Lounge and Pizzeria, 6817 Indianapolis Blvd. Tickets cost $15 at the door or $10 in advance. Reservations are due by July 27. Proceeds will support Susan G. Komen For the Cure. Garza, who splits her time living with a daughter and a sister in Merrillville and Valparaiso, is battling breast cancer. She received a grant from Susan G. Komen For the Cure to pay toward her treatment.

SCHOOL MEALS | Hobart, Lake Station

River Forest Community School Corporation is participating again this summer in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program for Children. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and meals are also available to adults at a cost of $1 for breakfast and $1.50 for lunch. SUMMER MEALS | Merrillville

Merrillville Community School Corporation is participating in the state Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children 18 and under without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Breakfast will be provided from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through Aug. 15, at Fieler Elementary School, 1407 W. 61st Ave.; Iddings Elementary School, 7249 Van Buren St.; Miller Elementary School, 5901 Waite St.; Salk Elementary School, 3001 W. 77th Ave.; Pierce Middle School, 99 E. 70th Place, and Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place.

CHESS TOURNAMENTS | Gary

Dates for the Gary Public Library Centennial Chess Tournaments are 1:30 to 5 p.m. July 19 and Aug. 16. Trophies will be given for the top three in each category - 13 and younger, 14 to 17 years old and 18 and older. They will be 15-minute games.

A huge garage sale will be held by Christipher, Vikki, and Jerry Mize from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 26 at 6702 Ohio Ave., with all proceeds going to this year's Alzheimer's Memory Walk. Baby clothes, collectables, Longaberger® baskets, Birkenstock® sandals, Precious Moments® and Boyd's Bear® figurines, books, toys, CD's, albums, clothes, and household items. The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk will take place Sept. 20 at Hidden Lake Park, 6355 Broadway, Merrillville.

CRUISE FOR A CAUSE | Valparaiso

Clare Bridge and Sterling House of Valparaiso will host a Car Cruise to benefit the Alzheimer Association from 4 to 8 p.m. July 26 in the parking lot of the Sterling House, 2601 Valparaiso St. A $5 donation per car will benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Bring vintage cars to share with the community. The International Truck will also be on display for the community to explore. Hot dogs, beverages and root beer floats will be available to purchase.
