PORTAGE | The cause of a Monday afternoon fire in a mobile home at Woodland Village Mobile Home Park is undetermined, but an initial fire investigation indicates the fire was unintentional.
The Portage Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from a mobile home at 424 Fourth St. The first engine arrived four-and-a-half minutes after dispatch to find heavy smoke coming from the home. Bystanders indicated no one was at home, according to a press release issued by the department.
Fire crews struck the fire in under nine minutes. A first alarm was activated to cover the city. Burns Harbor and South Haven provided the coverage until city units cleared the scene.
No injuries occurred but two cats died. The home sustained heavy smoke and heat damage, with most of the fire damage occurring in the kitchen area.
The owner of the home is Brian Anderson of Portage. His son, Nicholas Anderson, lived at the home, but was reportedly at work at the time of the fire.
Fire officials are continuing the investigation.
