Van trips | Homewood

H-F Park District has planned its final van trips for the summer. Travel to White Fence Farm, 1376 Joliet Road in Romeoville, for its renowned fried chicken lunch. Afterward, participants will enjoy Mestas Musicals' production of "Like Mother, Like Son." White Fence Farm trip is from 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Aug. 7. Fee of $59 per person includes van transportation, lunch and show. Trip departs from and returns to the Irwin Center, 18120 Highland Ave. Registration for trips is required.

Golf outing | Lansing

LARC, a nonprofit organization that provides services to people with developmental disabilities, will hold its 12th annual golf outing Aug. 4 at Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete.

The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with registration. At 11 a.m., a buffet lunch will be served and the putting contest where $10,000 can be won starts ($5,000 to the putter and $5,000 to LARC). Eighteen holes of golf begin at 12:30 with a shot gun start and complimentary beverages available through the whole round. After every golfer is off the course, a cocktail hour takes place including a buffet dinner featuring beef and pork carving stations. Tickets for this full day of events are $150 per person, which is tax deductible. Tickets for dinner only are $40.

Raffle | Calumet City

The Knights of Columbus Coronata Council 3806 are going to be selling raffle tickets Aug. 1, 2 and 3 at the following locations: Ted's Restaurant, 580 Burnham Ave.; Tom's Restaurant, 894 Burnham Ave.; and Aunt Sally's Restaurant, 1215 Burnham Ave. There are 72 cash prizes, and first prize is $10,000. Info session | Kankakee, Ill.

Governors State University will host degree program information sessions from noon to 2 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6. Prospective students are encouraged to attend these informal, walk-in sessions. Advisers and administrators will be on hand to discuss the master of public administration and undergraduate business and criminal justice programs. Spanish speakers | Oak Forest

Governors State University is offering an intensive, two-day workshop designed for Spanish speakers who wish to improve their verbal and written Spanish language skills. The workshop emphasizes grammatical structure and vocabulary and effective communication skills. This two-day workshop is offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 2 and 9 at South Suburban College and University Center, 16333 S. Kilbourn Ave. It can be taken for the noncredit fee of $125 or GSU tuition per credit hour.

Taste | South Holland

The eighth annual Taste of Thornton will take place Aug. 16 at Thornton Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd St. The Chi-Lites will perform, as well as seven time Grammy-winning Gospel artist Darius Brooks. Soundz of Santana will perform Santana's greatest hits and Dennis Stella will rock the crowd with his Elvis tribute. Steppers can dance on the front lawn of the Township Hall, with music from DJs Wali Muhammad and Daryll King.

Food and events will start at 10 a.m. with early bird bingo. Free coffee and doughnuts will be served. Other activities include a car show, arts and crafts, children's games and rides. Cupcake the Clown will paint faces and local food vendors will offer fare.

BABY CLASS | St. John

Community Hospital offers Taking Care of Baby from 6 to 8:45 p.m. Aug. 4 at Community Hospital Outpatient Centre, 9660 Wicker Ave. This free class covers basic baby care for the new and not-so-new parent. SUMMER CONCERT | Munster

The next program in the Sounds at Sunset summer concert series is 1969, who performs 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 3 at Heritage Park Gazebo, 1154 Ridge Road. The members of 1969 breath new life into songs made famous by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker and many other stars of the psychedelic era. CORN ROAST | Highland

Highland Rotary Club hosts its annual corn roast from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1 in Main Square Park, Ridge Road and Fifth Street. Tickets may be bought in advance for $6 or at the gate for $7. TRAVEL TEAM | Munster

The Munster Muddawg 14u Travel Team hosts its tryouts from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 2 and 9 at Community Park's "D" field. Registration will open 30 minutes prior to the tryout. Experienced players willing to play all year should attend. Players cannot be older than 14, as of Jan. 1, 2009.

SUMMER SYMPHONY | Whiting

Whiting Park festival Orchestra, a 45-member professional ensemble of musicians, performs at the historic Whiting Park Pavilion. It's conducted by Robert Vodnoy. All concerts start at 7:30 p.m. and are about two hours long, including intermission. The next concert in the series is Comic Courtships on Aug. 2. The orchestra visits comic and notorious battles of the sexes through music about the courtships of Kate and Petruchio ("Kiss Me, Kate"), Beatrice and Benedict ("Much Ado About Nothing"), Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown ("Guys and Dolls") and other famous pairs. "The Mikado" is Aug. 16. The orchestra and Whiting Park Festival Chorus with soloists Sharon Quattrin and Bob and Geri Hildreth perform a concert version of Gilbert & Sullivan's masterpiece. From Sea to Shining Sea is Aug. 31. Samuel Barber's "Violin Concerto," with guest soloist Gregory Maytan from Valparaiso University, highlights this year's Labor Day concert. The musicians perform a tribute to Satchmo Armstrong, "Armed

Forces Salute," and

the chorus rings out patriotic favorites. Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" sparks a fireworks display over Lake Michigan to cap off another season.

DOLL TEA | Cedar Lake

Lake of the Red Cedars Museum will host a doll tea at 2 p.m. Aug. 2 in the museum at the town complex, 7408 Constitution Ave. Girls of all ages are invited to bring a doll. Grandmas, moms, aunts, sisters, daughters and nieces are welcome for an afternoon of tea and fun. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 11 and younger. Reservations are required.

The 16U Munster Muddawgs will host tryouts at 9 a.m. Aug. 2 and at 3 p.m. Aug. 9 at Community Park's "C" field. The team was second in the state. Players with travel experience and commitment to competitive softball should attend. Players cannot be older than 16, as of Jan. 1, 2009.

BURN CAMP FUNDRAISER | Valparaiso

Tudor Services' fourth annual Golf Outing to support Hoosier Burn Camp is set for Aug. 11 at The Golf Course at Aberdeen, 245 N. Tower Road. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 10 a.m. The cost is $100 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch and dinner, hole contests, beverage carts, opportunity for skins, awards and door prizes. Hoosier Burn Camp serves Indiana's young people 8 to 18 years old who have suffered the pain and trauma of being caught in a fire. For many of these children, Hoosier Burn Camp is the only opportunity to connect with other burn survivors, play in the outdoors without another child looking or asking about their skin.
