WASHINGTON | A top aide for U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky has left his post amid a controversy surrounding the Northwest Indiana congressman's campaign finances.

Chuck Brimmer, chief of staff for Visclosky for several years, "has retired," Visclosky spokesman Jacob Ritvo confirmed Tuesday.

Ritvo declined to provide further details, including when Brimmer left.

Visclosky district director Mark Lopez has been named his replacement, Ritvo said.

Brimmer's departure comes as Visclosky is embroiled in a federal probe of his onetime top source of campaign funds. The Merrillville Democrat announced last week that his congressional office, campaign committees and some staff have been subpoened as part of the investigation into disgraced lobbying firm The PMA Group.

Visclosky also announced Tuesday that he was ceding his control of the House 2010 energy and water bill to a fellow Democratic congressman out of Arizona.
