County offers discount card for prescriptions

Cook County has partnered with the National Association of Counties to provide residents with discounts on prescription drugs not covered by insurance, Cook County Commissioner Joan Patricia Murphy, D-Crestwood, said.

The discount is available to any county resident without prescription coverage and could provide discounts for medication not covered under existing plans.

The card will provide an average 20 percent off of a pharmacy's regular price on commonly prescribed medication, and an average savings of 50 percent on three-month supplies of select generic medication through the mail.

Residents can receive a discount card through local municipal officials or at Murphy's district office at 5405 W. 127th St. in Crestwood.

Volunteers brushing up at Washington School

As part of a Dolton Elementary District 148 "paint up, clean up, fix up" campaign, between 30 and 40 volunteers will be painting classrooms Monday at Washington Elementary School in Riverdale.

Target store employees, district vendors, School Board members, staff, and parents will be volunteering their time to paint between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Comptroller Carolyn Keith said.

Classes are not in session Monday in observance of Veterans Day.

Three students who bring in the most volunteers to help with the effort will be awarded savings bonds during the School Board's Nov. 28 meeting, she said.

Landfill comments deadline is Nov. 23

The deadline to file comments on a proposed permit for Waste Management's CID Landfill is Nov. 23.

A copy of the permit is at the Hegewisch library, 3048 E. 130th St., in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood, for public examination.
