Crown Point Community Foundation and Indiana Youth Institute presents "It‘s All About Character- Instilling Character in Young People" from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. April 9 at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30, Hobart. Dr. Mike Thomson will be the instructor for this program, open to youth workers, teachers, community leaders, youth ministers and all who impact the lives of youth.

The $45 registration fee includes breakfast.

The foundation is taking applications for the Dan and Vicky Klein Leadership Award to underwrite the $45 fee. There is $1,000 available and the foundation will honor applicants by the date the application and registration forms are returned to its office at 213 S. Court St. The program offers 5.5 Continuing Education Hours through NASW and IAPP and two continuing Renewal Units through the Indiana Department of Education.

Marcus Trybula, a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 45 and a Crown Point High School honor student, is working on his Eagle Scout project to renovate the welcome sign on North Main Street.

It is his responsibility to raise funds for his project, including building a two-tiered planning bed using decorative stone along the edging. Marcus needs donations of landscaping plants, dirt and cash.

Ballet performs "Peter Pan"

Indiana Youth Ballet will perform "Peter Pan," a storybook ballet, April 12 and 13 at Crete-Monee High School, 1515 W. Exchange, Crete, Ill.

Crown Point dancers include Hannah Katz (as Tinkerbell), Amy Gerike, Samantha Darnell, Laura Katona, Kayla Grkinich, Sydney Stanek, Kaitlyn Culp, Isabella Stevens, Madison Breford, Kenedi Carnagey, Sydney Manhatton, Grace Kostoff, Brooke Manhatton, Hailey Kitchell and Karley Woodson.

Kids and kites

Mayor Dave Uran's "Kids and Kites" program is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. April 12 in Kaiser Park on South Main Street. Featured are Z107.1 F.M.'s Don Clark and Bailey from "The Wake-Up Crew," a kite decorating workshop and an official flight of the kites. Families are encouraged to enjoy a day in the park.

Take a trip with the Y

Senior citizens can enjoy a performance of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at Valparaiso's Memorial Opera House on April 20 with the Southlake YMCA. The show starts at 2 p.m. and tickets are $14.

The YMCA van is available for $5 per rider and will leave the parking lot at 1450 S. Court St. at 12:30 p.m. The group will stop for dinner (on your own) at Around the Clock.
