SOFTBALL CLINIC | Portage

Portage High School softball will hold a five tool softball clinic for girls grades four through eight beginning Nov. 23. Two four-week sessions will cover all softball skills including pitching, catching, fielding, running and conditioning.

Instructors will include former collegiate coach and current head coach Gil Arzola; Sarah Paape, All American infielder at Grand Valley State, and Randi Ochall, former All Conference pitcher at Merrillville High School. The Valparaiso Department of Parks & Recreation is currently accepting reservations for the 2008 hayride season at Rogers-Lakewood Park. Hayrides will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings, and on Sunday afternoons through Nov. 9. Available hayride times will be 5:30, 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings and 3, 4:30 and 6 p.m. Sundays. Reservations include a 45-minute hayride and 45-minute campfire. Hayrides take place at Rogers-Lakewood Park. Groups are welcome to bring food and beverages. The standard fee per hayride is $65; resident discount fee is $55 plus tax for your entire group.

The resale shop is seeking volunteers to serve as cashiers, to sort through donations and to help with various other jobs. Volunteers can earn "resale dollars" by volunteering a certain number of hours and by recruiting other volunteers. The shop also names a volunteer of the month. The shop's hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Portage Resale Shop is a nonprofit organization. The money generated stays within Porter County.

A men's college basketball double-header Nov. 1 hosted by Purdue University Calumet will benefit The Salvation Army.
