SOFTBALL CLINIC | Portage

Portage High School softball will hold a five tool softball clinic for girls grades four through eight beginning Nov. 23. Two four-week sessions will cover all softball skills including pitching, catching, fielding, running and conditioning.

Instructors will include former collegiate coach and current head coach Gil Arzola; Sarah Paape, All American infielder at Grand Valley State, and Randi Ochall, former All Conference pitcher at Merrillville High School. Cost for each session is eighty dollars payable to Portage High School. Space is limited

BALLROOM DANCING | Portage

A free ballroom dance class will be held from 7 to 8 tonight at Woodland Park in Sycamore Hall. Mary Chandler is the instructor. This is a free beginner level class. The Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club will be collecting new or gently used winter coats, sweatshirts, hats and gloves to help local families. GROUP HAYRIDES | Valparaiso

The Valparaiso Department of Parks & Recreation is currently accepting reservations for the 2008 hayride season at Rogers-Lakewood Park. Hayrides will be held on Friday and Saturday evenings, and on Sunday afternoons through Nov. 9. Available hayride times will be 5:30, 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings and 3, 4:30 and 6 p.m. Sundays. Reservations include a 45-minute hayride and 45-minute campfire. Hayrides take place at Rogers-Lakewood Park. Groups are welcome to bring food and beverages. The standard fee per hayride is $65; resident discount fee is $55 plus tax for your entire group.

RESALE SHOP | South Haven

The Portage Resale Shop, 404 W. U.S. 6, now lists special sales on its Web site, http://portageresaleshop.org/Home_Page.php. Watch for upcoming coupons on the Web site. The resale shop is seeking volunteers to serve as cashiers, to sort through donations and to help with various other jobs. Volunteers can earn "resale dollars" by volunteering a certain number of hours and by recruiting other volunteers. The shop also names a volunteer of the month. The shop's hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Portage Resale Shop is a nonprofit organization. The money generated stays within Porter County.

The Neuter Scooter will offer discount spay and neuter surgery to cats only in Crown Point on Oct. 28 and in Hammond on Oct. 29. Exact location will be given when appointment is made. The Neuter Scooter is a low-cost mobile spay/neuter clinic. Appointments are $40 in advance and $50 on the day of the clinic. A free rabies vaccine is included.

VEHICLE INSPECTIONS | Hobart

To mark Car Care Awareness Month, the Car Care Council is sponsoring a free Vehicle Safety & Maintenance Inspection Day beginning at 9 a.m. Nov. 1 at Borowski Auto Services, Ind. 51/130 and Cleveland Road, one mile south of Ridge Road. Inspections will include belts, hoses, air filters, tire pressure and fluid check. There will be free hot dogs, pop and candy for children, a gift package for the first 40 customers and several maintenance specials offered. Nonperishable food items will be accepted for the Hobart Food Pantry.

CASH FOR CANDY | Merrillville

Michael H. Min, DDS will sponsor a Halloween Candy Buy-Back Program this holiday. Children up to 14 can bring their unwanted Halloween candy from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 5 to the office at 1410 E. 85th Ave. and receive $1 a pound. The candy, along with toothbrushes, will be sent to U.S. military troops serving overseas via the Indiana Air National Guard's 122nd Fighter Wing - Blacksnakes.

KETTLE CLASSIC | Hammond

A men's college basketball double-header Nov. 1 hosted by Purdue University Calumet will benefit The Salvation Army. The first game in the 10th annual Kettle Classic at 1 p.m. will pit Calumet College of St. Joseph against Indiana University Northwest, and a 3 p.m. game features Purdue University Calumet vs. Mount Mercy from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Featured at half-time of both games will be a Three-Point Shoot Off for Lake County high school boys and girls. Doors open at noon and tickets are $5 at the door. The Salvation Amy's Kettle Campaign will begin Nov. 14.
