Artists' month | Chicago

Throughout the month the Southeast Chicago Historical Society Museum, 9801 S. Avenue G, in the Calumet Park Field House, will feature an exhibit of the work of local artists and photographers. Come and see what local artists and photographers have done using the Calumet Region as their subject. Works by Joseph Mulac, Rod Sellers, Gloria Novak and 100th Street muralist Noel Morales will be displayed. The regular hours of the museum are 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays. The museum will also be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25.

Open houses | Calumet City, Crete

Nicor Gas will participate in fire department open houses this month. It will present Natural Gas: Safety At Home, an exhibit to provide information about natural gas safety at home. The public is invited to participate in the event, which covers a variety of home safety measures that help prevent fires. Nicor Gas will display hands-on exhibits, such as examples of replacing brass appliance connectors.

Open houses are planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Crete Township Fire Protection District's Station 2, 25048 Klemme in Crete; and from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Calumet City Fire Department's Station 2, 1250 Pulaski.

Family fiesta | Calumet City

In honor of Hispanic American Month, there will be a family fiesta from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Corner of Pulaski and Lincoln avenues. There will be a clown, face-painting, balloons, karaoke and Calumet City Idol.

Society meets | Homewood

Homewood Historical Society will meet at 7:30 tonight in the lower level of St. Paul Community Church, 18200 Dixie Highway. Following the meeting and a refreshment break, Helen Ehlebracht will discuss the history of Nielsen's Bakery in Homewood, as well as the background of the Nielsen and Ehlebracht families. The meeting and program are free and open to the public.

Pancake breakfast | Chicago

Wrestling | Calumet City

The Calumet Memorial Park District's Wrestling Wolverines are preparing for another season. This program is open to kindergartners through eighth-graders. Practices are held 6:45 until 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and some Saturday mornings. Meets and tournaments are held on weekends. The fee is $50 per participant, and includes uniform, IKWF card and insurance. The Wolverines are offering a free wrestling clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 11 at Memorial Park, 612 Wentworth Ave. Come out and meet the coaches and learn about the program.

Fish fry | Lansing

LARC, a nonprofit organization providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities, will be hosting its 16th annual fall fish fry fundraiser from 4 p.m. to midnight Oct. 10 at its facility, 19043 Wentworth Ave. A raffle will be held that evening with the chance to win a total of $2,000 in cash prizes. All proceeds from this event benefit LARC.

Open houses | Charleston, Ill.

Eastern Illinois University invites all prospective students to get a first-hand look at the campus and its offerings during free open houses on Oct. 13 and Nov. 10. The open houses, sponsored by the Office of Admissions, will provide prospective students and their families the opportunity to meet with faculty and student service personnel; hear from financial aid officers, housing staff and current EIU students; tour the campus, residence halls and Greek Court; and enjoy a complimentary lunch in one of the dining centers.

Main St. Cher Wright, of Paranormal Sciences, will cover basic theories, experiences, equipment used and information about the paranormal field. Wright is the Northwest Indiana Representative of American Ghost Society. It is a nationwide organization networking professional ghost hunters from all over the country.
