PAPER DRIVE | Schererville
Fourth-graders, known as the Green Team, has started a paper drive. All week, students and parents will collect newspapers, papers and magazines and deposit them Friday mornings in a container in the side parking lot of the school, 7300 Forest Ridge Drive. A percentage of money earned will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Every three months, the team will select a new charity. The goal is to raise enough money to buy benches made of recycled material for the playground. The public is invited to participate.

WE THE PEOPLE | Hammond
The National Endowment for the Humanities has created the We the People initiative, which aims to encourage and strengthen the teaching, study and understanding of U.S. history and culture through libraries, schools, colleges, universities and cultural institutions. Each year, the endowment and the American Library Association have created a bookshelf of titles related to U.S. ideas and ideals. Hammond Public Library locations were among those awarded copies. During March, teens at the Hammond Public Library, 564 State St., can read any title from the We the People bookshelf and win a prize. This year's theme is "Pursuit of Happiness." Titles are available by phone.

KIDS CAFE | Gary
Kids Cafe after-school program is offered from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. weekdays at the YWCA of Northwest Indiana, 150 W. 15th Ave. The cost is $25 per week for one child and $40 per week for two children. Activities include daily snacks, homework assistance, arts and crafts, health and wellness program and young leaders on the move.

ADULT EDUCATION | Hammond
Adult basic education classes, GED (General Education Development) test preparation classes, citizenship and English-as-a-second-language classes are offered by the Adult Education Department of the School City of Hammond. Classes are held year-round and are free to Indiana residents 19 and older. Indiana certified teachers instruct all classes, which are held in the Area Career Center, 5727 Sohl Ave., and in other community facilities. Those 16 to 18 years old may participate if they are not enrolled in high school. Call the Adult Education Office for requirements.
