Munster man gets year in custody for molesting

Lake Criminal Court Judge Thomas P. Stefaniak Jr. sentenced a Munster man Wednesday to a year in custody for child molesting.

Thomas W. Harris, 20, is to spend one year at Lake County Community Corrections followed by three years of probation. Court records show Harris admitted he sexually molested an 8-year-old girl visiting his home two years ago.

The victim's mother first discovered the alleged incident when the girl spoke to her about the sexual encounters and pain she was experiencing.

The girl told her mother Harris threatened to strike her if she told anyone what was happening, reports state.

Two teens charged with theft from cars, drinking

Crown Point police arrested two teens at 3:14 a.m. Wednesday after witnesses saw them breaking into vehicles at a Harrington Avenue apartment complex.

A 14-year-old Crown Point boy and a 16-year-old boy from Merrillville were caught on Walnut Parkway when they were seen breaking into another vehicle, police said.

Police said they found two backpacks stuffed with items the teens grabbed from the cars. They were carrying an iPod, cell phone, satellite radio, compact discs and sunglasses, police said.

Both boys were taken to the Lake County Juvenile Center and are being referred on theft and minor in possession of alcohol charges.

C.P. police can't locate reportedly naked man

Crown Point Police responded to a report of a nude man in the 200 block of Maxwell Street Tuesday evening.

Witnesses said the naked man got out of his red Kia and asked what time of day it was, police said. He then left southbound on Indiana Avenue from South Street. Officers checked the area and could not find the man.
