HOLIDAY CLOSING | Jasper County

The Jasper County Public Libraries in Rensselaer, DeMotte and Wheatfield will be closed July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. All three sites will resume regular hours July 5.

MASTER GARDENERS | Crown Point

Training to become a Lake County Master Gardener volunteer will be offered on Thursdays for 13 consecutive weeks starting Sept. 4. Classes will be held either from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. or 6 to 9 p.m. (to be determined later) in the meeting room at the new Extension Service Office, 880 E. 99th Court, Suite A. This noncredit course, offers intensified training on a broad range of gardening topics. Once training and certification have been completed, there will be many opportunities to participate in Master Gardener activities. Those passing the final exam are required to donate 35 hours of their time to Purdue Cooperative Extension Service sponsored activities. Upon completion of the volunteer requirement, participants will be certified as Master Gardeners by Purdue University and will be eligible for continued membership in the Purdue Master Gardener Program. Fee is $200, with $100 refunded after passage of the final exam and completion of the volunteer time. Download an application

BOOKreMARKS | Lake County

The featured book for July for readers participating in the online book discussion hosted by the Lake County Public Library is "Rules of the Road" by Joan Bauer, a popular young adult author. It is the story of 16-year-old Jenna, who learns much more than the rules of the road as she drives her crusty, elderly employer from Chicago to Dallas. SCRAP BOOKING | Cedar Lake

Beginning and experienced scrap bookers are welcome at a class at 6:30 p.m. July 7 at the Lake County Public Library's Cedar Lake branch, 10010 W. 133rd Ave. Consultant Danielle Benich will provide the supplies, and participants should bring photos to create a two-page spread. There is an $5 fee for materials, due at the time of the class. Refreshments will be served.

MOVIE TIME | Calumet Twp.

After a 10-year-old boy floods an ant colony with his water gun, he's magically shrunken to insect size during a film shown at 2 p.m. July 2 at the Lake County Public Library's 41st Avenue branch, 3491 W. 41st Ave. The film features the voices of Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Nicholas Cage. Enjoy popcorn and a story along with this film for children of any age. Register in advance.

Lansing Lions Club will host a golf outing starting at noon July 12 at Lansing Country Club. The fee is $75 per golfer and includes golf, cart, food and drinks on the course from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sponsorships are available at $100 per hole. This event is replacing the club's annual steak fry.
