PANCAKE BREAKFAST | Westville

The Westville American Legion Post No. 21 hosts an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon today. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, milk and coffee. The price is $5.50 for adults and $4.50 for senior citizens; children 12 and younger $4.

SWEETEST DAY DINNER | South Haven

South Haven Lions Club Italian buffet will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at the South Haven American Legion Post 502, 429 W. County Road 750 North. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 6 to 12. Several Italian entrees are planned along with salad, garlic bread, beverage and dessert.

All proceeds will go to support efforts in the community to help those in need have an enjoyable holiday this Christmas.

GARAGE SALE | Valparaiso

Valparaiso Fire Fighters Local 1124 will host a garage sale fundraiser Oct. 17-19. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 17, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at the old Fetla's building located at 1457 S. Ind. 2. Items include housewares, toys, tools, building supplies, clothes, furniture, baby clothes, toys, desks and more. Hot dogs, popcorn, pop and water will be available. Fire trucks and fire fighters will be on site. Proceeds from the sale help support community charitable events.

Country breakfast | Porter Twp.

Salem United Methodist Church will sponsor an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Oct. 25 at Salem Fellowship Hall, 756 W. County Road 350 South. Cost is $6 for adults, $4 for ages 5 to 12 and children 4 and younger eat for free. There also will be homebaked goods for sale also. Proceeds will go toward the missions of the church.

MEMORIAL | Valparaiso

A Celebration of LifeĀ—"Charlie's Hugs" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 13 at the MHA building, 402 E. Indiana Ave Members of the Healing Hearts Grief Support invite the public to join them in a memorial and celebration of lives of loved ones lost. This ceremony will focus on the circle of life as celebrants are invited to water a newly planted tree and share names of those they mourn. Refreshments will follow with a time for sharing and celebrating positive memories. This is the first of what will be an annual memorial hosted by MHA. Autumn was chosen as it a time of change and mirrors the change that occurs with the loss of a loved one. It will be called "Charlie's Hugs" in memory of Charlie Hendrix, a member of the support group who passed this year. Make reservations.

Sheriff David Lain invites senior citizens of Valparaiso to stop by for coffee and conversation at 8 a.m. Oct. 14 at Campbell Street Cafe, 4245 Meridian Woods Drive. the sheriff plans to answer questions, hear concerns and chat about current services available to the older adults of the community.

PRESCHOOL OPENINGS | Valparaiso

Immanuel Preschool has several openings left in classes for 3-, 4- and 5- year olds. Class sizes are small; the playground and building are secure, and the program is accredited. Both scholarship and "scrip" assistance are available to help cover tuition. A new 5-day program began this fall for older preschoolers whose parents are looking for additional challenges or in preparation for full-day kindergarten.

OIL PAINTING | Portage

An all day beginning oil painting class, taught by Susan Young, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Portage Public Library, 2665 Irving St. The project is a lighthouse scene. Preregistration and prepayment of $55 is requests.

Fall carnival | Valparaiso

Northview Elementary school will hold its fall carnival from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the school, 257 Northview Drive. Sponsored by the Northview PTO, the carnival includes a haunted house, games with prizes including two cake walks and an assortment of carnival treats from pizza to cotton candy. Admission is free and food and games require tickets. All proceeds will go to Northview PTO sponsored events. Children and parents alike are invited to dress in costume.

American Legion Post 502 hosts a comedy night beginning at 8 p.m. Oct. 25. Emcee for the event is Chuck Kilgore from Portage, featuring Brian Hicks of the Midwest circuit. Headliner will be Carol Pennington of Cleveland, Ohio. Tickets are on sale now at the post for $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Each ticket purchased will be entered into a door prize drawing. Doors open at 7 p.m. Drink specials will be available. Must be 21 or older to enter. The legion is located at 429 W. County Road 750 North.
