Cleaning woman faces charge of forging check

A Gary cleaning woman allegedly stole a blank check from a home she was cleaning and cashed it for $300, Schererville police said.

Helena Collazo, 26, of 5601 W. 44th Ave., was charged Friday with forgery, a Class C felony, and theft, a Class D felony, in connection with the May incident, according to an affidavit.

Collazo allegedly stole a blank check from a house in the 7200 block of Dove Drive and later wrote a $300 amount to herself, forging the victim's signature before cashing the check, the affidavit says.

Library offers knitting class later this month

Anyone looking to learn more about knitting can attend a knitting class at 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Ave., Merrillville.

Anyone attending the class should bring knitting needles and yarn.

CROWN POINT

Volunteer firefighters' group hosts food drive

Members of the Crown Point Fire Volunteer, Inc. and its Ladies Auxiliary will host a food drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at Jewel, 1276 N. Main St., and Strack & Van Til, 10851 Broadway.

Members will be collecting nonperishable food and personal care items at both locations. Food may be dropped off at the fire station at any time. The food collected will be donated to local charities and food pantries.
