CROWN POINT | A Merrillville man avoided trial on a charge of attempted murder, pleading guilty Monday to felony criminal recklessness and admitting to crashing into a woman on his Jet Ski in 2006.
Jason D. Clark, 29, is likely to be sentenced to two years in prison and be ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution, Lake County court records filed Monday in the case state.
The victim, who is from Illinois, said she was at the Wells Street beach in Gary on July 9, 2006, when she was approached by a drunken Clark, who grabbed her body and demanded she expose her breasts.
When she refused, Clark made threatening gestures with a bottle and walked away, court records allege.
After the confrontation, the victim waded into the water as Clark got onto his Jet Ski, picked up speed and crashed into her, causing injuries to her face and chest and knocking her unconscious, court records allege.
When he was arrested, Clark's blood-alcohol concentration was 0.27, more than three times the legal driving limit of 0.08, police said.
Clark initially was charged with six felonies in Lake Criminal Court, including attempted murder, battery and operating a motorboat while intoxicated. Those charges will be dropped in exchange for his plea. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 10.
The victim also has filed a $135,000 civil suit against Clark. Clark's insurance company is asking a federal judge to declare that the insurer should not have to pay the damages because the crash was not accidental.
That case is pending.
