CROWN POINT | Lake County commissioners are getting so cost conscious the official drink of county government might soon be tap water.

Commissioner Fran DuPey, D-Hammond, asked Wednesday that her two fellow commissioners avoid renewing a contract with a vendor to supply bottled water for the county highway department.

"All departments are using bottled water. We are cutting spending everywhere. It's time to discontinue this and go to tap water," she said.

Commissioners awarded a contract Wednesday to David Cordova & Associates of Chicago to translate the county jail inmate manual from English to Spanish. The firm will be paid $65 per hour until June 30, 2009, up to a total of $25,000.

Commissioners awarded a contract to Craig Futterman & Jason Huber to provide training to sheriff's officers and administrators to avoid potential lawsuits. The firm will be paid $25,000.
