NORTHWEST INDIANA

I-80/94 lanes restricted for patching work today

The Indiana Department of Transportation will restrict the right lane of east and westbound Interstate 80/94 between Ind. 51 in Lake County and Ind. 249 in Porter County from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today during pavement patching.

INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and keep in mind worker safety when traveling through a construction zone.

WHITING

Elks Lodge holds turkey dinner on Nov. 17

The Whiting Elks Lodge 1273 holds a Turkey Shoot at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17.

Cost is $9 for adults, $5 for children up to 12 years old. Bring in two canned goods and get $1 off, for a maximum discount of $1 per person. Canned goods will be donated to the Whiting Food Pantry.

The menu includes turkey, stuffing, sweet and mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry relish, salad, butter and dessert.

Meet new chamber of commerce director Nov. 12

The Gary Chamber of Commerce holds a meet and greet for its new executive director, Charles Hughes, from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Genesis Convention Center, 1 Genesis Center Plaza.

Food and refreshments will be available.

PUC School of Technology holds open house

Purdue University Calumet's School of Technology is holding an open house for prospective students, parents and others at 5 p.m. Nov. 15 in Room 148 of the university's Anderson Building.

Guests will have the opportunity to talk with faculty, advisers and students, as well as tour classes and facilities, including Purdue Calumet's new virtual classrooms. Refreshments also will be served.

The School of Technology offers undergraduate degree programs in such fields as computer graphics technology, computer information technology, construction management and engineering technologies, electrical and computer engineering technology, industrial engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, and organizational leadership and supervision. Numerous professional certificate programs and a master's degree in technology also are available.

Donations needed by Nov. 15 for Thanksgiving baskets

Each year, American Legion Post 485 fills Thanksgiving baskets for families in need and is hoping to have all food items donated by Nov. 15.

Those wishing to donate a nonperishable food item for the baskets can drop them off from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Sunday at the post, 7485 Burr St., Schererville.

Cash donations and checks are also accepted. Checks can be made out to Post 485.

GARY

Legacy of Excellence awards banquet Sunday at Genesis

DanceExcel, in conjunction with Children Into Champions, the Champion Foundation, hosts the Legacy of Excellence awards banquet at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary.

The event honors members of the Gary and Northwest Indiana community who, through their own endeavors, have made outstanding contributions to the arts and education. This year, awards will be presented to Garrett Cope, professor at Indiana University Northwest; Chester Gregory, who has appeared in Disney's "Tarzan" and "The Jackie Wilson Story;" Dr. Steve Simpson, who has worked with the Gary Literacy Coalition and Dr. Danita Johnson Hughes, chief executive officer and president of Edgewater Systems for Balanced Living.

Tickets for the dinner, awards and performances are $35 per person. All proceeds go toward furthering opportunities for children in the Northwest Indiana community to benefit from exposure to creative arts in education.
