OGDEN DUNES | The six newly slated candidates for the fledgling Ogden Dunes Party now will wait and see if they have any competition come the Nov. 6 election.

And, according to one losing candidate at Monday's meeting, there very well may be a race this fall.

Three incumbent town administrators and three newcomers were voted onto the slate Monday night by nearly 125 town residents, who packed the fire station. The new party was formed after a meeting of Republican and Democrat town leaders who decided they wanted to form a nonpartisan party.

Judith Root Stiles, president of the Town Council, was unopposed to represent Ward 1 on the new party's ballot, as was present Ward 2 Councilman Brad Wood. Newcomers Bill Gregory, representing Ward 4, and Eric Kurtz, the town's fire chief who represents Ward 5, also were unopposed and elected to the ballot with an affirmation vote.

Ward 3 saw three residents throw their hats into the ring. Nick Kanich, Bob Selund and Eric Haussman all told residents they wanted a seat on the new party's ballot. After presenting themselves to residents and answering questions on issues ranging from short-term renters to concerns about the new Portage Lakefront Park, Haussman, an 11-year resident, won with 67 votes.

Selund, a longtime resident who has been active in the town, received 52 votes, and Kanich, a lifetime resident and recent college graduate, received eight votes.

Selund, however, might still be on the ballot this fall. A Democrat, he said after the town meeting that he will consider running for the Town Council as a Democrat if he feels he can garner the necessary support. Selund will have until Aug. 1 to decide if he wants to run on the Democratic ballot.

Incumbent Clerk-Treasurer Marie Englehart received a narrow nod from those in attendance. Englehart, who has served as clerk-treasurer since March, received 61 votes. Her opponent, Donna Smith, a Police Department clerk, received 59 votes.
