CHAMBER DEDICATION | Merrillville
The Merrillville Chamber of Commerce office building at 255 W. 80th Place will be dedicated at 6 p.m. today to John J. Janik for his many years of service and dedication to the chamber, Town of Merrillville and State of Indiana. Janik served as president and CEO of the Merrillville Chamber of Commerce for 28 years, earning him the distinction of holding the longest tenure at a Chamber of Commerce in the state. He was a founding member of the Regional Development Corporation and charter board member of the Regional Chamber Initiative, president of the Northwest Indiana Chamber Executives Association, past president of the Merrillville Rotary Club and past assistant governor of Rotary International for District 6540. He was the recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Rotarian Paul Harris awards. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and a member of American Legion Post 369.

JUNIOR MISS TEA | Cedar Lake
The Annual Junior Miss Tea will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Lake of the Red Cedars Museum in the town complex at 7408 Constitution Ave. All high school senior girls interested in the 2009 Cedar Lake Junior Miss program are welcome at this informational meeting. The scholarship program is open to all high school senior girls residing in the Town of Cedar Lake or Hanover Township.

KARATE IN THE PARK | Crown Point
Crown Point Parks and Recreation Department and Homann Karate Do offer karate classes for children ages 3 to 8 on Tuesdays, from Aug. 26 through Sept. 16, at Collins Park, 95th and Merrillville Road. In case of rain, classes will be moved to the Crown Point Civic Center, 101 S. East St. Crouching tigers for kids ages 3 and 4 meets from 5:30 to 6 p.m., and Hidden Dragons for kids ages 5 to 8 meets from 6:10 to 7 p.m. Children learn self-defense skills as well as patience, focus, respect, honor, kindness and perseverance. Cost is $42 for residents and $57 for nonresidents. Register by Aug. 22.

TEST PREPARATION | Lowell
An informative session about how to prepare for the PSAT/SAT tests will be offered at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave. Gloria Vela, a licensed English and reading teacher, will present the program to high school students and their parents at no charge. Besides experience in teaching English and reading to students at the middle and high school, and post-secondary levels, Vela has taught GED-prep to students enrolled in adult education programs in Hammond, Schererville and, currently, East Chicago.

CARING FOR PHOTOS | Merrillville
The identification and care of the most common 19th century photographic processes is showcased in a traveling exhibition from the Indiana Historical Society to be shown from Aug. 26 through Oct. 15 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. U.S. 30. "A Perfect Likeness: Care and Identification of Family Photographs" focuses on identifying and caring for daguerreotype, tintype, ambrotype, cabinet card and carte de visite photographs. On Oct. 11, the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society, in conjunction with the Lake County Public Library, will feature a program titled "Repairing Our Photographs" by Eric Basir of Photo Grafix.

FALL SOCCER | Cedar Lake
Cedar Lake Park and Recreation Department offers Fall Soccer to children ages 4 to 13 at the Park of the Red Cedars, 7408 Constitution Ave. Sign up through Aug. 29. 'Lil Kicks is offered for ages 4 to 5 (as of Sept. 1) and meets from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. This program introduces soccer skills, team play, and the opportunity to interact with peers. Children participate in warm up exercises, drills and then play a game. Each child receives a T-shirt and team photo for the fee of $25. A co-ed recreational league offers three age divisions; 6 to 7, 8 to 9 and 10 to 13. These teams practice weekly and games are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays on three fields. Fee of $30 includes a T-shirt and team photo.

ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS | Munster
Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Philip Bauman, announces fall auditions for the 2008-09 season for Violin, Viola, Bass, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion. Auditions will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road. Open to highly accomplished musicians in grades 8 through 12 and post-high school students younger than 22, the orchestra offers a dynamic and educational musical environment which places a strong emphasis on artistic excellence, personal growth and providing exceptional performance experiences. The Youth Orchestra presents two concerts each year, one in December and one in May, and will also perform a concert with the Northwest Indiana Symphony in October. Sunday rehearsals begin Sept. 7.
