New Beginnings Transplant Support Group for pre- and post-transplant patients and families meets at 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of every month in the auditorium at St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave.

FLU SHOT CLINIC | Crown Point

A Flu Shot Clinic will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 17 at the Crown Point Community Library, 214 S. Court St. The vaccinations will be administered by specially trained Jewel-Osco pharmacists. The cost is $24.99 and there is no charge to patients with Medicare Part B.

PASTA DINNER | Schererville

Lake Central AAU Basketball will host an all-you-can-eat pasta spaghetti dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 20 at Banquets of St. George, 528 W. 77th Ave. There will be a bean bag tournament, raffles, vendor booths and a bake sale. Vendor booths are $35 each.

COMMUNITY BUILDING | Gary

Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and the IUN Nonprofit Institute will sponsor a Community Building Series from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 21 and 28 in Room 203 at the Indiana University Northwest Library Conference Center, 3500 Broadway. Nonprofit and other community-based organizations are invited to this first-time series geared toward developing skills in community building, networking and developing impactful coalitions. VACCINE & FUN | Merrillville

MRSA FACTS | Northwest Indiana

The Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County will present "What is MRSA?" at several locations in Lake and Porter counties in October. Remaining presentations will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Linden House, 360 W. 61st Ave., Hobart; at 12:15 p.m. Oct. 16 at Village Park Enrichment Center at Banta, 605 Beech St., Valparaiso, and at 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at Jamestown Apartments Community Center, Virginia Park Drive, Valparaiso.

This informational program will discuss the risk factors, signs and prevention of MRSA. Participants will receive a free gift and a healthy snack. This is part of Senior Moments, a monthly lecture series designed for seniors who take an active role in their own health care.

PREPARE FOR BABY | Crown Point

A new series of six weekly Preparing for Childbirth classes will be held at Marian Education Center, St. Anthony Medical Center, 1201 S. Main St. Attend from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 4 through Dec. 9, or Wednesdays, Nov. 5 through Dec. 10, to discuss labor, birth and postpartum issues. Lamaze breathing and other coping techniques will be taught. A weekend class is also offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on two consecutive Saturdays, Oct. 18 and 25 or Dec. 6 and 13. The fee is $60.

SHOT AND A BEER | Merrillville

Stop by for a Shot and a Beer - a flu shot and a root beer - as well as a free massage from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Town of Merrillville's Senior Services center in the town hall, 7820 Broadway. Flu shots will be provided by the VNA of Porter County and are free to those who bring their Medicare Part B card and $30 for others. Root beer is compliments of Golden Living Center and massages are courtesy of Team Physicians, both of Merrillville.

SPECIAL SCREENING | Schererville

During October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Advanced Imaging Center, U.S. 30 and Burr St., offers new digital mammograms, using a special detector with images immediately available to a radiologist for diagnosis, for $125, including physician fee. Also, bone density screening will be offered for $125.

SALON WITH A HEART | Crown Point

State of Mind Salon and Day Spa is known for pampering its clients, but to the American Heart Association, it is known as a generous contributor. Salon owner Pattie Kobe and her staff are on track to surpass $22,000 in contributions through four years of direct pledges in addition to participation in Northwest Indiana fundraising events. "Several of my long-time guests had suffered heart attacks; that triggered me to do some research in that direction," said Kobe. "I liked the fact that a high percentage of donations to the American Heart Association are used for actual research," she said. Kobe is also an active executive committee member for the local Go Red for Women Symposium and Gala.
