State offering guides to boost students' success

The Indiana Department of Education and Commission for Higher Education are offering student success magazines.

The reader-friendly publications, called OnTrack, offer helpful information on study skills, Indiana's academic standards, ISTEP-Plus, Core 40 requirements, career exploration, planning and preparation for college, study strategies and tips for parents.

Copies were sent to all schools statewide for students at the beginning of the school year.

Two Spanish language versions for multiple grade levels also are available this year.

Families who have not received a copy can download the magazines at www.learnmoreindiana.org/pubs.

VU dean signs letter on Russia-Georgia conflict

The dean of Valparaiso University's School of Law, Jay Conison, has joined 68 other deans of law schools in the United States in signing a letter stating their support of international norms of conduct and the rule of law in the Caucasus region, which includes the nation of Georgia and southern parts of Russia.

In July, Conison and other law school deans who signed the letter traveled to Georgia for a conference aimed at strengthening that country's legal and judicial institutions.

In early August, Georgia launched a surprise attack on the breakaway province of South Ossetia, spurring a counterattack by Russian troops.
