CROWN POINT | Torrence Scott was shooting to kill, Lake County prosecutors allege.
But the 11 gunshots that Scott, 23, of Gary, fired failed to kill his intended target.
Scott was charged Friday in Lake Criminal Court with felony attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery for allegedly shooting another man 11 times at about 6 a.m. Aug. 24 in the 4200 block of West 23rd Place in Gary.
The victim was shot in the face, neck, both arms and other areas of the body but survived, court records state. He was on a ventilator for four days, his jaw shattered and wired shut, prosecutors said.
The man's nurse told police the victim's left foot is semi-paralyzed as a result of the shooting.
Scott was sentenced in 2003 to 10 years in prison for felony charges in another case, Lake Criminal Court records show.
He pleaded guilty to felony criminal recklessness and intimidation in return for prosecutors dropping higher-level attempted murder and criminal recklessness charges in that matter, court records state. Scott was transferred into the state's Community Transition program in 2007.
The victim in the latest shooting told police he was warned Scott would try to kill him, police said. He said he was on his way home from an after-hours club when the shooting occurred.
Scott will be held at the Lake County Jail without an opportunity for bail, court records state.
