State to recognize top math, science students
Gov. Mitch Daniels announced a new state award today to recognize Indiana's top high school talent in math and science.
The Hoosier High School Math and Science Awards will be given each year to the state's best and brightest high school math student and science student.
All Indiana high school students are eligible to receive the award and can apply online. Nominations from teachers, principals and other school staff members will be accepted. Application criteria will include such information as SAT, ACT and Advanced Placement scores, awards and prizes and grades received in math and science courses. Winners, who will be acknowledged as Mr. or Miss Math or Science, respectively, will be selected by a committee of high school math and science teachers, curriculum experts from the Indiana Department of Education and the governor's office.
Applications are available online at https://secure.in.gov/apps/mathscienceawards/. The deadline to apply is April 4. Winners will be announced before the end of the school year.
MERRILLVILLE
Ballroom dance class set to begin March 12
The Merrillville Parks and Recreation Department is offering a six-week ballroom dance class starting March 12 at the Pruzin Community Center, 5750 Tyler Place.
Classes meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, and a minimum of eight students is required for the class.
The cost of the program is $40 for residents and $45 for nonresidents, and the deadline to register is Wednesday.

Cleveland restricted until Friday afternoon
Cleveland Avenue at Cleveland Terrace in Hobart will be open to local traffic only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.
The road is closed because the city is replacing the lift station.

Police: Woman stole from her grandmother
Tiffany R. Bish, of Hobart, was charged in Hobart City Court with check deception after she allegedly stole five checks from her grandmother on two occasions and attempted to cash them at several banks without permission.
The girl's grandmother told police she received a phone call from the assistant branch manager of the Portage Chase Bank advising her the signature on the checks didn't match the signature card on file.
MERRILLVILLE
Copper tubing stolen from air conditioners
Police said copper tubing was stolen from four air-conditioning units on the roof of the former Brown's Chicken, 510 W. 81st Ave.
The tubing was removed sometime between Dec. 30 and Friday, police said, and workers renovating the facility discovered the tubing was gone after they noticed the units weren't working properly.
Police said all four of the units will have to be replaced, which will cost about $28,000.

Quick Cuts out $150 after burglary Friday
There are no suspects in a burglary Friday night at Quick Cuts, 2490 W. 81st Ave.
Police said a glass door was broken, causing $500 in damage, and $150 was stolen from a drawer.

Man tells cops group of teens beat him up
Police said a Merrillville man was battered Sunday morning while using a pay telephone on 73rd Avenue.
The man told police he was using the phone about 12:45 a.m. when a group of juveniles jumped out of a car and battered him.
The man suffered several minor injuries but refused medical treatment.
CROWN POINT
Cops: Man hit woman, broke protective order
James Griffiths, 41, of Crown Point, was charged with domestic violence and invasion of privacy Sunday after breaching the protective order his girlfriend had against him, police said.
Crown Point police arrived at the home in the 1900 block of West 94th Avenue on Sunday for a domestic disturbance call.
They tried to contact the homeowner by ringing and knocking on the front door, but were unsuccessful, police said. When they heard screaming from inside the home, officers forced their way through the front door.
Griffiths was inside and told police his girlfriend was in the rear bedroom. She had a cut on her lower lip and told police he punched her in the mouth when they were arguing.
She said Griffiths locked her with him in the bathroom when police arrived.
Griffiths was arrested and charged with domestic violence and invasion of privacy. Police said the charges might be upgraded to include felony confinement.
