Taxpayers group to talk county budget, election
Topics at the next Team Hammond taxpayers group meeting will include the Lake County budget hearings, the status of the new high school and November general elections.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at Woodmar United Methodist Church, 7320 Northcote Ave. A meet and greet will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Team Hammond meetings are open to any Lake County residents interested in fiscally responsible government and lower property taxes.

Back-to-school party to be out of this world
The Schererville Parks Department and the Calumet Astronomical Society will host a back-to-school star party this weekend.
The event will be from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Stephen Park, 7600 Lincolnwood Ave.
Members of the society will take guests on a tour of the planets, star clusters, galaxies and other celestial objects. Everyone is welcome.

Open house spotlights Indiana Tech campus
Indiana Tech has scheduled an open house for 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 27 for its new Northwest Indiana campus in the Indiana Building at 5246 Hohman Ave.
The community can view the facility and learn about program options on campus and online.
Through the college of professional studies, Indiana Tech offers career-oriented undergraduate and graduate degree programs at an accelerated pace. The Hammond location will offer the organizational leadership degree and other degree options.
The college's other local campus is in Merrillville.

IUN institute plans open house Oct. 3 on campus
The IUN Center for Regional Excellence Non-Profit Institute will host its third annual open house and resource fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 in the Savannah Center on the Indiana University Northwest campus, 3400 Broadway.
Exhibitor reservations are available for this regional, nonprofit event. The open house will include guest speakers, workshops and display booths from many of the region's nonprofit agencies and vendors who serve them.

Purdue Night at RailCats stadium slated for Friday
Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central will welcome alumni and friends at 7 p.m. Friday for an evening of minor league baseball at The Steel Yard in Gary.
The Gary RailCats will play the Joliet JackHammers.
A limited number of tickets for the party deck are available to Purdue alumni and friends for $30. Tickets can be purchased at the Student Services Business Office and the Office of Alumni Relations at Purdue Calumet and through the alumni office at Purdue North Central.
Included are game tickets, a meal package, dessert and soda.
Purdue Night pregame activities begin at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game. Participants are encouraged to wear Purdue colors -- black and gold.
